one. Among their display was a bottle of red liquid labelled as "Cherry Velvet" and described as "a fine smooth blend of vodka, cherry wine and West Country magic". I had finally found cherry vodka and didn't hesitate to buy a bottle - but would it be a match for the Polish drink I had sampled in Revolution?
The bottle itself is uninspiring, the label a simple white one with green text and a gold Witham Friary logo - in short, it looks like something produced from a very small company who doesn't go for an emphasis on appearances. But that in itself is rather good, as it usually means that the emphasis is on the product itself, and not on the marketing. I believe this makes it vastly superior to any of the mass-produced and over-advertised stuff you get in chain stores! :-)
So did the cherry velvet live up to expectations? That ...

The film opens to a large pair of crushed blue velvet stage curtains gently moving in the breeze. As the credits roll we are treated to a very serene rendition of the song 'Blue Velvet', sung by 60's singer Bobby Vinton. The cameras close in onto a stunningly clean, pure white painted picket fence. In front of that some very long stem red roses are swaying in time to the music. Everything is going in slow motion, lazy hazy kind of feel. Kids are skipping across along the street, without a care in the world, and a woman is sitting in front of her TV ...

The Velvet Underground is one of those groups who became far more famous after their demise, haveing had little real success during their existence.
The hype which accompanied their creation and launch was considerable if one takes into account this was the 60's when PR was rather less important and sophisticated than it is now. The band came from the hip "punk" (in the American sense of the word) scene of New York. Backed by the pop artist (as in fine art) Andy Warhol - everyone will have their five minutes of fame - the first album had featured Warhol's famous peeling banana cover and was billed as "The Velvet Underground and Nico". Nico was a mysterious German chanteuse more famed for her beauty than her husky - sometimes out of tune - voice.
