The best-selling social history of Victorian domestic life told through the letters ... more
diaries journals and novels of 19th century men and women. The Victorian age is both recent and unimaginably distant. In the most prosperous and technologically advanced nation in the world people carried slops up and down stairs; buried meat in fresh earth to prevent mould forming; wrung sheets out in boiling water with their bare hands. This drudgery was routinely performed by the parents of people still living but the knowledge of it has passed as if it had never been. Running water stoves flush lavatories -- even lavatory paper -- arrived slowly throughout the century and most were luxuries available only to the prosperous. Judith Flanders author of the widely acclaimed A Circle of Sisters has written an incisive and irresistible portrait of Victorian domestic life. The book itself is laid out like a house following the story of daily life from room to room: from childbirth in the master bedroom through the scullery kitchen and dining room -- cleaning dining entertaining -- on upwards ending in the sickroom and death.Through a collage of diaries letters advice books magazines and paintings Flanders shows how social history is built up out of tiny domestic details. Through these we can understand the desires motivations and thoughts of the age. Many people today live in Victorian terraces and so the houses themselves are familiar but the lives are not. The Victorian House will change all that.

Advantages: a step back in time, beautifully preserved Disadvantages: difficult for disanbled, limited opening times
What do you think of when you think of Glasgow. The wet weather, the incomprehensibly strung accent, the obsession with football or the fact that it can be a rough industrial working class city? Part of this makes me think of the tenements that I studied in my Scottish history degree. Those blocks full of cramped conditions, bad sanitation and breeding grounds for TB that were so fondly beloved of the Glaswegians. Those slum tenements may have long been cleared away to be replaced by the equally bad high rise flats on far flung council estates but the better class of tenement still survive, elegantly lining the streets of Glasgow with their wonderful red sandstone facades. The tenement is such a symbol of Glasgow's past the national Trust for Scotland owns such a house in Garnethill very close to the Sauchiehall Street area ...
Advantages: Good, cheap food; warm... Disadvantages: Long waiting times; untidy; just not that great...
The Counting House
The Counting House is part of the Wetherspoon's chain of pubs, which you don't really notice from the outside. It's located in the centre of Glasgow on St. Vincent's Place, which is across from George's Square. It is located in a really good place, it's so close to the main shopping part of Glasgow and George's Square looks gorgeous around Christmas with all the lights.
From the outside, the building is amazing. It's quite similar to a lot of the architecture around Glasgow which I love. Inside, there are high ceilings and it looks really quite beautiful, you do feel like you're in an old-fashioned, stately home. There is a huge bar in the middle of the room, surrounded by bar stools. There are also high tables around the centre of the room. If you go a little further from the bar you will find tables ...
Advantages: very central Disadvantages: very busy at times
Living in England these past twenty years but coming from scotland i frequently have to travelto glasgow ad have had the pleasure of staying at this travel inn.
The inn itself is sitiuated very central within the heart of glasgow and is easily reached coming from M8 southbound and M74 northbound.
The inn itself is a comfertable place to relax have a nice meal and blow the cobwebs away from an exhausting day.
The rooms are very comfertable and the cleanliness is of a high standard the inn caters for most peoples culinary requirements and the food is of a high standard.
Iwould have no problem recommending people try it but it is only my opinion.
postnote.
glasgow is a vibrant throbbing community and staying at the inn gurentees you access to its lively shops boutiques and pubs.
Enjoy
