Advantages: 5 Star hotel in central location Disadvantages: Some areas could be improved upon
I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in January 2004, which was my first (and only so far) trip to New York, and at the time only my second trip to the USA. Given that I didn't feel I'd be regularly jetting off to New York, I'd decided to check us into the hotel I'd always heard about and hence had always wanted to stay at.

The lobby area is large, with the reception being located right at the back, meaning you have to walk through the lobby and past the main lifts to get to check in to your room. It's not a problem as such, but you are left following your nose and common sense, which, when your body is telling you it's 2am, you're not really up to doing.
We booked the hotel stay through BA Holidays rather than directly with Hilton (the Waldorf Astoria is now owned by this chain) and managed to get a good deal, which resulted in staying a night free of charge. The fact that we had booked via a third party did concern me a little, as it's something that potentially could so easily go wrong, but we checked in without any problems and happily trundled off to our room, which we'd been told had recently been renovated.
The room was good and suited our purposes completely, as we hadn't anticipated spending a long time in it: our trip was purely for sightseeing purposes. However, for a room which had been recently renovated we were disappointed to notice that the curtains weren't in the best state of repair.
The bed was a large double, which was incredibly comfortable. There was a desk next to the door, and a fitted wardrobe which was great for storing all the new clothes I purchased while we were there! There was also (which I now find to be quite typical of American hotels) a cupboard on the wall opposite the end of the bed which housed the TV. There were plenty of channels, which kept the husband happy when we returned from sightseeing each day frozen (remember, we went in January) and I must admit it was nice each evening to close the door on the TV screen!
The bathroom was cosy but large enough for two people. We did have some trouble figuring out the shower: eventually we gave up and housekeeping sent up an engineer to look at it. He turned it on straight away, which was rather embarassing, but some sort of instructions wouldn't have gone amiss. There was a good range of toiletries, and the shower pressure was good (so disappointing to step into a lovely shower only to find out the water trickles out like a garden hose).
The room was quite high up but we still did suffer some street noise. This is probably only to be expected though given that the hotel's location is so central and NYC is a busy city.
The lobby and reception area were decorated tastefully, and were very tranquil. The area by the lifts had an enormous floral arrangement which was quite stunning.
Near this area there was also a cocktail bar, where a pianist played late afternoon/early evening. One afternoon during our stay we decided to try out the cocktail bar and listen to the piano. I was extremely disappointed to find that the cocktail bar didn't have a cocktail list! When I asked them for a mojito, the waiter didn't have a clue what it was, and I was offered a Cosmopolitan instead, as they knew how to make this. The cocktail was good, but my own choice of cocktail would have been better. This was accompanied by assorted nuts which are served free of charge with the drinks. Unfortunately, drinks are pricey and I think that afternoon for three cocktails and three beers, we probably spent about £40. All in all though, the cocktail bar does have a good atmosphere. They also serve high tea here, which, although I deemed it to be expensive, did look to be delicious with a variety of sandwiches and cakes being served on a tiered serving dish.
We also ate one evening at the Waldorf Astoria's steakhouse - the Bull and Bear. We had a nice meal here, and the service was top notch. We've found that wine in the US is more expensive than you'd pay here in the UK for a bottle, even if you're looking at ordering American wine such as something from California. You could easily pay £20 upward a bottle (and that's with an excellent exchange rate). However, the meal was nice and the New York cheesecake I had for dessert was to die for.
Externally, the hotel is impressive, and is excellently located for the main sightseeing. We were able to walk to most places we wanted to see easily. The only thing we did find is that while there were diners nearby which were suitable for breakfast (breakfast was not included with our nightly room rate) there weren't really any restaurants nearby, except for the hotel's own facilities.
In conclusion, if you want to stay at a landmark hotel that everyone will have heard of, the Waldorf Astoria hits the mark, especially when you factor in location. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but shortly will need some renovation work to maintain the five star luxury that is expected of such a hotel. I do believe though that you could probably get more for your money in other five star New York hotels. Bottom line: would I stay again? Probably, but not with seriously checking out the opposition first.
Advantages: Location, Price, Facilities, it's the "Waldorf Astoria"! Disadvantages: Mixed service levels, chaotic check-in
The Waldorf Astoria, one of the world’s landmark hotels takes up an entire New York block, between Lexington & Park Avenues at 49th and 50th streets.
We thought this would be the ideal place for our 4 night stay in New York in August 2003. We booked the hotel through expedia.co.uk and got a good deal which worked out at £50 per person per night (room only).
I had read a number of reviews (on other websites – so slap my hands!) and had mixed feelings ... ...a Limo to transfer us the 45 minutes from Newark Liberty Airport to the hotel. The cars pull into a special garage area under the building out of site of the general public. First impressions were not good. The whole area seemed very disorganised with people obviously waiting for taxis and luggage stacked everywhere. The driver helped us with our luggage seeing as though there seemed a distinct lack of hotel staff (remember, this is supposed to be ...

Advantages: Your staying in a historic Art Deco landmark! Disadvantages: Service could be better....
...I ended up in the Waldorf Astoria!!!
I've stayed in NYC for business before, and I knew to expect small rooms and spend a lot of money. Here, I was staying in the most historic hotel in the US, oozing Art Deco chic from every corner. Your first impression of the hotel is it's impressive Park Avenue frontage, seen many times in movies. The entrance and reception area is stunning . The clock in the reception hall, a stunning timepiece, shows you that ... ...massive king size bed, with the requested cot bed from my daughter. There was a walk in closet, that was huge! The bathroom looked very art deco, and I was a little worried the plumbing might not be up to standard, but there wasn't a problem. I've stayed at the Hyatt Regency 5 star in NYC in the past, and it was a box in style and size compared to the Waldorf.
We had a fax machine in our room, which I had to use due to a mixup with our car rental ...

...delayed. Expecting to start work the next morning I was disapointed that the reception was empty apart from the token receptionist milling around in the back of the desk area. Eventually getting my room key I made my way up to the room. I guess for a 5 star hotel I should have expected that the lifts would work correctly but then again I should have known better. Being an old hotel didn't really instill faith in me as I figured out that the only ... ...floor was to stop on the floor below mine and then change lifts? I was relieved to see that the room made up for the challenging start to my visit to New York. I was lucky enough to have a corner suite which gave me stunning views over the area. The rooms are somewhat small however, and rather dated. I hope that by the time I visit again they will have updated the rooms just a little.
As with all american hotels, the bed was really soft. In room ...

Advantages: Everything is done in style Disadvantages: Very expensive
If you are looking to live the high life during your stay in NewYorkcity, book in to the WaldorfAstoria hotel. The lobby has to be seen to be believed with a stunning clock and superbly furnished check in desks. They have a number of top quality restaurants ranging from their best offering, the Peacock Alley to the lively Oscar's. the rooms are spacious and well furnished. The room service and maids are of the highest quality, which you would expect paying this much for a hotel room. But it really does deserve its title as one of NewYork's most prestigious and luxurious hotels. ...
Advantages: First class service, spacious rooms, clean and tidy Disadvantages: Perhaps not so family-friendly
This is the largest hotel in the city of Gothenburg. Don't expect a hotel the size of the WaldorfAstoria in NewYork or the Bellagio in Las Vegas. It's a little more compact than that, however, it is a wonderful hotel that I would recommend to anyone visiting Gothenburg.
The hotel is in a nice area of the city and there is a theme park practically on your doorstep. The hotel is easily identifiable from most parts of the city with its two towers.
As you enter the hotel it is clear that you have paid for a little bit of class. The lobby is huge and the greeting you receive from your hosts will leave a very good impression. The people at Gothia Towers are well trained to be very helpful and they execute the hotel ethos with aplomb. And I am not just referring to the reception staff. The bar staff, waiters, waitresses, room ...
I have always dreamed of going to NewYork and staying at the WaldorfAstoria, to me it represented the true glamour and romance of the city.
Upon arriving we were tired and just wanted to have a shower and then head off to take in a few of the closer sights. The queue to check in was HUGE, and when we finally got to the front we weren't even greeted with a hello or smile, just got asked for our names, not a good first impression. However, we were upgraded to the Waldorf Towers, apparently the more luxurious part of the hotel. The Towers does have a fitness suite that Towers guests can use free of charge, and hotel guests can use at a supplement. Towers guests also have a private lounge, and a separate, more personal, entrance and reception area.
When we finally found the lifts to go the Towers (eventually we were told that you ...
