Advantages: Elegant architecture, plenty of green spaces, lots of museums, good food Disadvantages: Not so good for people with mobility problems
A couple of weeks ago, to celebrate the auspicious occasion of my mother's birthday, we took my parents to Zagreb for the day. Of course, we set out from Slovenia so it wasn't the enormous undertaking that sounds. The Croatian capital is well worth a stay of at least a couple of days, but it also makes an excellent day trip and is a viable destination from the holiday resorts of Croatian Istria, the coastal towns and other places in Slovenia, Venice and Trieste in northern Italy and the Plitvice Lakes in northern Croatia. Advantages: Fascinating, colourful, might get to sample some Croatian foods, shop for a picnic Disadvantages: Can't buy some things if you're in a hotel

Advantages: Not hard to find, good craft market, useful transport hub, impressive buildings Disadvantages: Expensive cafes, ugly advertising hoardings
of the tourists were cooling their tired, hot feet in the fountain!
Both the Jelacic statue and the Mandusevac monument are popular places to meet up with friends as they are both surrounded by a couple of steps which make a good place to sit. However, there are several cafes to sit at in good weather and indulge in a bit of people watching while enjoying a coffee - or a beer if you prefer. Be warned though, sitting at one of these cafes is pretty costly so get off the main square if you?re on a tight budget.
Each day in summer a small craft and souvenir market sets up on the square. Some of the stall holders wear traditional dress and give demonstrations of the skills involved in whatever it is they make to sell. There are always lots of cute things bearing the popular heart-shaped Zagreb logo as well as lavender, art pieces and handmade wooden ...
