Most of the information that I have is kindly provided by the organiser, Glenn Herbert (and is also one of the DJ's) who provided me with the relevent links to their website page.
The night has been going for a few years now. The history on the site goes back to May 1998, when the second room was opened. The sixth birthday party will be held in May of this year and The Wendy House is currently the biggest alternative night in the North. The popularity just seems to grow and grow! Age restrictions of strictly over 18's only are in operation and random checks are made by doorstaff, so don't be too surprised if you are asked if they ask check the contents of your pockets/bags or ask for proof of age ID (it's for your own good!).
The club itself has a 1200 capacity and there's always a nice interesting mix of people. There's a great big sound system, huge video screen, air conditioning and sweeties and balloons (yes, helium ones too if you want to go for the Mickey Mouse effect!) and TWO BARS!!!! There are five resident DJ's - three in room 1 and two in room 2 (Mutate). Music is a great mix of alternative, 80's and Goth in room 1 and in the Mutate room, the music is described as hardcore dance industrial.
If you fancy going along I'd thoroughly recommend it! Check out the website first at www.thewendyhouse.org. This also has a photo gallery, a monthly competition to win tickets, a map for how to get there, lovely colourful fliers featuring various characters from cartoons/ kids tv programmes and if all this isn't enough, there's some games on there too!
Getting there is reasonably easy. I can't say what buses go that way as I don't know, but if you go by the map you can walk from Leeds city centre (if you don't mind and your shoes aren't too tight!) or by taxi, which is about the easiest mode of transport. The website also includes a useful link to local B&Bs if you want somewhere to stay and don't have mates with crash space in Leeds.
I would thoroughly reccommend trying this venue at least once on a Wendy House night. There's a brilliant party atmosphere, plenty of room to move about (even when there's loads of people in!) and you don't have to queue for ages for a loo!
The next Wendy House nights are as follows: March 20th April 17th May 15th June 19th (next dates will be posted when I know them).
If you don't want to have to queue for too long I would also reccommend getting there as close to doors opening time as possible. There's a cloak room where you can leave your ermmm... cloak (or I do, at least - yes, I have a cloak!) for about a quid, but go to collect them a fair while before the end of the night or you could be queueing for ages as everyone seems to do a mad dash just before kicking-out time.
It doesn't matter if you go along by yourself either. The atmosphere's so good you're just about guaranteed to get talking to someone you may never have met in your life as people go from all over the place, it's that good!
I don't think there's anything else I can think of from the top of my head. Visit the website, or better still, go along and experience it for yourself. There's no doorlist, so you don't have to sign up for it first or anything. I give this my personal seal of approval (just wish I could get along a bit more often than I currently do)!
