In early September we spend a week driving the west coast of Scotland. From Newcastle we drove to Glasgow and spent a night in the city. Then up to the stunning scenery of Loch Lomond and then continuing up the West Coast which is just stunning, empty and pristine..... Then across to the isle of Skye for a night and finally across the country to Loc Ness and Inverness and the long trip back home from there.
This is a trip I would recommend to anyone willing to undertake the driving, believe me it's a long way even from the depths of the North that is Newcastle. Additionally of course you must be happy to camp and in this respect obviously you take a risk with the weather but this is Scotland what do you expect! We had perfect weather which helped, although it was freezing at night.
There are countless back of beyond, empty campsites in which you can pay next to nothing to sleep (<£10 to pitch up) with a stunning view from your tent, basic but adequate and clean facilities were always provided and there are so few people and so few cars on the roads which is GREAT! You're going to need some equipment e.g. tent, portable stove, maps, foldaway chairs etc but once you have all this then you're away and can repeat the experience in the future.
The Isle of Skye was a particular highlight, we took the ferry across to the South on the way and headed home over the bridge in the North. We dinined on some of the best and freshest seafood I've ever had in Portree, gorgeous languistines freshly caught and juicy mussles washed down with a glass of wine and a great view of the pretty little harbour from the window. This was our special trest on our cheap trip and it is pricey but it was my partner's birthday!
This is an ideal trip just for relaxing, spending a week out in the fresh air and walking. It did us the world of good!! Get planning for next Summer and let me know how it goes!
I have been to most of these places (not them all) and would pretty much agree with you. However the East cost is soooooo much better than the west coast, after all I live there ! Leeroy ~Onwards and Upwards~

Love this part of the world, the roads are fantastic. Me and a couple of mates went up there on the bikes a few years back.
