I have just got back from the USA, where I stayed in this hotel. It was a treat for us to stay in a posh hotel - so I don't have much to compare it to, but it was very nice!
As you arrive at the main lobby it looks and feels very grand - you walk into a seating area with a large clock hangin from the ceiling and a grand piano in the corner (which gets played in the evenings). Then walking though to the reception area to marble floor and chandeliers look very impressive. It didn't seem to matter that we were dressed in scruffy jeans and must have looked a mess after a 10 hour flight!
We stayed in the main building - which is the original historic part of the hotel (and also the cheapest rooms!) We paid about $80 a night. It was booked through octopus travel - and checking in was very quick and easy (just presenting the voucher from octopus). This was for room only (although you could buy breakfast in one of the many cafes/restaurants down stairs). This wasn't really a problem as there are a number of diners in the area where you can pick up a large plate of pancakes for about $6 or a breakfast buritto and tea for about $10.
The room was large and very comfortable. The standard room had a queen sized bed - which was very comfy (especially after a day of sight seeing!) The room inlcuded a a comfy chair, two bed side tables - one had a clock/ alarm/ radio on it, desk (+chair) with writing facilities, telephone, large TV (which came with internet access, film channels and nintendo - all of which you pay an extra fee to use.) There was also a minibar (at the usual overpriced cost) - but watch out it has recently become electronic - so make sure you don't remove anything or you will be charged for it! An ice bucket is provided - with an ice machine down the corridor (our one was broken, which meant going to another floor for ice!)
The bathroom was marble effect with bath and shower (in together - not separate!) the shower had a double head - which was fun! There was also a hairdryer and the usual supplies of shampoo/ conditioner/ moisturiser.
Every weekday morning you will receive a copy of USA today at your door. You will be charged $0.75 for this unless you return your unread copy back to reception.
The check in staff were quick and friendly, although being such a large hotel (and part of the Westin chain) it all felt a little inpersonal.
There are many facilities at the hotel - including a spa, shops, restaurants, and 24 hour room service we chose not to use them though, so I can't comment on these.
The hotel is situated right on union square - which is handy if you like shopping, as all the major stores are a short walk from the hotel.
It is also situated 5 minutes walk from the BART - underground train (powell street stop) which is a cheap and convenient way of getting from the airport ($10.30 return from the airport)
If you want to get to Fishermans wharf / golden gate bridge it is a long walk! (about 40 minutes to the wharf) or you can get on the old cable cars - which stop right outside the hotel.
