Mrs B and I met in Lincoln many moons ago when we were just 18 and so it holds many happy memories and we decided to celebrate one of our anniversaries by returning to Lincoln and treating ourselves by staying in the infamous White Hart Hotel.
All the time that we used to live in Lincoln this hotel was well known for it's so-called excellence and you had to be 'somebody' to be able to afford to stay there so when it came to our anniversary we thought we would really splash out and have a luxurious weekend in this hotel.
Needless to say we were disappointed. I think in terms of Lincoln this hotel is something special but not compared to other hotels in different areas. Lincoln, we always joke, is behind in the times and so maybe this hotel does seem very posh and well to do to good old Lincoln folk like we used to be but it really isn't anything special and we really can't understand why it is so very much over-hyped.
The hotel is very old, it's steeped in history and still has the original White Hart statue outside. When we went on the ghost walk once it featured in many of the tales and there have been lots of royal
guests that supposedly stayed their in the early 1800s. You can tell just by looking at it that it's old, the windows are huge and the decor is very dark and the ceilings are very high and very grand.
You can also tell that the hotel is very old as it has wallpaper which needs replacing, it has mould in some of the bedrooms and you can't help but feel as though the whole place just needs a really good clean and lick of paint.
It is such a shame as this old building could really be something amazing just like we expected it to be. If it had a lot of work done on it then the elegance of this building could really shine through, instead it was quite opressive.
The hotel has special events including weddings, conferences and murder mystry parties. I can see that this would be really quite a good setting for a murder mystery but maybe not for a wedding as it just all seems so dark and ever so over priced! The setting of the hotel though is quite nice so you could get some nice photos if you like old buildings... but not really if you're looking for beautiful rolling hills and fancy bridges and lakes to appear in your wedding photos as there is no greenery whatsoever!
The hotel is set at the top of Steep Hill which is LIncoln's very old part of town. The shops are all very old and picturesque and the cobbled street is a lovely part of the feel of the oldness. Lincoln's cathedral and castle are both a stone's throw away and you can get some amazing views down across Lincoln if you find the right spot. So the actual setting of the hotel is very convinient for the shops and town but is at the top of steep hill so you're out of the way of the night life at the bottom of the hill- students, believe me, wouldn't attempt Steep Hill whilst drunk!
The hotel room was fairly large, you could tell you were not in a travel lodge but then it was three times the price and I wouldn't say it was three times as good! There was mould on part of the wallpaper and there were no other extras than you would have in a travel lodge really expect for maybe more floor space! You'd expect to have at least an amazing view (we viewed the back of the hotel), a dvd player, fancy biscuits, something extra like that considering the price per night but we had nothing!
The food was okay. The evening meal was lovely, we couldn't really fault it. There was a weddingtaking place so we ate in the smaller of the two restaurants which was very intimate and cosy. There was a piano there so we presume that sometimes there is a pianist who comes to play but he wasn't there whilst we were. The food options were limited, Mrs B went for something vegetarian and I had pork and it was faultless really. Nothing wrong with either dish and we really enjoyed our meals. The breakfast wasn't quite so good, it was pretty cold when we got it which isn't what you expect from a supposedly top notch hotel and you got the impression the staff were all hung over.
The cleanliness of the hotel couldn't really be faulted. I didn't notice anything that looked dirty, it just all looked a little tired and no amount of cleaning could change that, a good lick of paint would though! But we weren't really worried about cleanliness exept of course for the mould in our room!
Value for money this hotel isn't great. It cost us £90 a night for dinner bed and breakfast, which, compared to other Lincoln hotels is very expensive. I think the cheapest room is £75 for a single although it may have changed now. I really don't think it's great value at all and I dread to think what they charge for weddings!
In terms of facilities there was no gym or swimming pool or anything extra than just the bedrooms, bar area and the two restaurants.
I wouldn't really recommend this hotel though, I would recommend if you go to Lincoln and you want to stay somewhere nice to try The Courtyard which is by the waterfront. This is more modern, extremely clean, lovely views, large carpark and amazing food.
I've given it 3 stars which is pretty generous actually but the food was good and the hotel wasn't all that bad it was just the price and it's very hyped up reputation which let it down!

What a shame it was a bit of a letdown after you went there to rekindle some memories, Definitely sounds like they need some work doing and probably need to lower the prices too or they'll have NO custom! x
