Yorkshire's White Horse

Advantages: Interesting to see, nice setting
Disadvantages: Only dates from 19th century

...brother lived in Wiltshire under the shadow of a white horse carved into the limestone hillside above Westbury. I was always fascinated by this figure so when I discovered that there was a similar white horse in North Yorkshire within a day trip of where I live it became a place that I wanted to see.

The practice of carving white horses and occasionally other figures into the landscape dates back to prehistoric times, the reasons behind their creation vary but many have religious origins. There is even an official name for the creation and study of these horses called "leucippotomy".

The Kilburn Whitehorse lies below a flat grassy plateau that was once the site of an ancient Bronze Age settlement so ... more

York's magnificent Minster

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

constructed in 1338 and the Five Sisters Window in the north transept. Both of these windows are over 16 metres tall. The Tower was the part of the Minster that I was particularly interested in seeing. The climb to the top however would not be suitable for the infirm as there are 275 steep steps to conquer before you get there. The view from the top however is breathtaking and not only can you look down on the narrow, medieval streets of York below but you can see much further too. It is said that on a clear day that you can see as far as the Yorkshire Wolds and the White Horse carved into the chalk hillside at Kilburn on the North Yorkshire Moors. The north west end of the Tower is where the Minster's gigantic bell can be found, weighing 10.8 tonnes it is affectionately known as "Great Peter". The Tower itself weighs a staggering 16 ...

Galloping across Wiltshire

Advantages: Fascinating addition to landscape. Interesting stories/fables behind their making. Reminder of special historical events.
Disadvantages: Regular maintenance and scouring needed to prevent them disappearing into the landscape

next time. ~ Regimental Badges ~ Fovant Down in Wiltshire is home to 12 regimental badges, cut by different regiments in around 1916, often early in the morning before rifle practice. However, you need to be quick if you wish to view some of these, as they are no longer going to be regularly maintained and will be slowly fading away as time progresses. ~ Kilburn White Horse ~ One of the biggest carvings of all can be found in the north of England, at Kilburn in North Yorkshire. I have not had the chance to view this one first hand, but I must say that from photos I have viewed of it, it?s a rather odd looking horse! ~~ FURTHER INFORMATION ~~ If you?re interested to taking this tour yourself, a more comprehensive tour description with road numbers and ordnance survey references can be found at:- http ...
