Galloping across Wiltshire

Advantages: Fascinating addition to landscape. Interesting stories/fables behind their making. Reminder of special historical events.
Disadvantages: Regular maintenance and scouring needed to prevent them disappearing into the landscape

Scattered throughout the south of England are some 57 hill figures. They’re also known as chalk carvings due to the fact that they’ve been cut into the hillside turf to expose the underlying chalk rock beneath. Of these 57 odd hill figures, Wiltshire seems to boast more hill figures than any other county in England, the most prolific of which being the white horse figures.

My father often had sales calls to make in Wiltshire when I ...
...ride just for the scenery. What with Silbury Hill, the mysterious stones at Avebury and Long Barrow (not to mention Stonehenge not so far away), Wiltshire is steeped in history. However, the thing that fascinated me most as a child were the chalk carvings in the hills throughout the county.

The most famous of chalk carving of all is the White Horse of Uffington on the Berkshire downs. However there are another eight visible chalk ... more

The Beauty Of Wiltshires White horses

Advantages: All of these sites are steeped in history
Disadvantages: None at all

...White chalk horses embedded in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Before we go on to take a closer look at each of the White horses maybe I will tell you just why I love them so much. When our children were young the Westbury White Horse was a very popular weekend visiting place, you could bundle the kids into the car, pack a picnic, have just enough petrol in the tank to get there and back and still be sure that it was going to be a good afternoon ...
...narrow and windy road. But the road does have a number of `passing points`. As the car reaches the brow of the hill there is grass as far as the eye can see. The Westbury White Horse was then the equivalent of a modern indoor play centre but it was filled with fresh air and cost little or nothing for an afternoons visit. Everywhere you looked there would be tartan blankets covering the grass, sandwich boxes and bottles of pop were then the order ...

Visit Wiltshire and its 'neigh' bours!!!

Advantages: Lots of information, like a leaflet , interesting to the reader
Disadvantages: none

...lovely review!! She has given the people on this site a lot of things to look at. I have many friends in the United States and Canada, they will most definately be really interested in this subject. The good thing about this review is the actual factual content, which horses are the most defined ?which are less attractive and clear? not as good to view etc. This is helpful when you love taking photographs of the places and subjects you visit,as I ...
...This review includes the time it will take to visit all the beautiful chalk carvings. about 5- 6 hours It's a bonus to see and view ,free of charge from a distance, an interesting family day for all .Go up close or just view from afar, depending on who is with you and the weather,A dry day is obviously best for this trip,(horses more visible) This is a very well written piece of information, covering the history behind the chalk carvings of Wiltshire ...

Wonderful Wiltshire

Advantages: Easy access to everything South West
Disadvantages: Not very close to the sea

I have lived in Wiltshire most of my life. It is home to seven White horses and of course the well known Stone Henge. In addition to Stone Henge we have Avebury which is another Stone Phenomena as well as other attractions. Parts of Wiltshire are situated close to the M4 corridor enabling easy access to London and Wales. The county is bordered by Somerset, Dorset, Hamphire and Gloucestershire. There are many pretty towns in Wiltshire, Bradford-on-Avon, Malmesbury, Corsham, the city of Salisbury with it's beautiful catherdral and of course historic Lacock with it's Abbey. this has been a very popular venue for filming for period dramas such as Cranford. From my little town, I have easy access to Bath and Bristol which are excellent for shopping and to experience stunning Georian Architecture. The Royal Circus in Bath is ...

Yorkshire's White Horse

Advantages: Interesting to see, nice setting
Disadvantages: Only dates from 19th century

For many years my brother lived in Wiltshire under the shadow of a white horse carved into the limestone hillside above Westbury. I was always fascinated by this figure so when I discovered that there was a similar white horse in North Yorkshire within a day trip of where I live it became a place that I wanted to see. There are many examples of figures of horses cut into the landscape in England but in northern England they are quite rare and the one at Kilburn in North Yorkshire is the most northerly such example in Britain. The practice of carving white horses and occasionally other figures into the landscape dates back to prehistoric times, the reasons behind their creation vary but many have religious origins. There is even an official name for the creation and study of these horses called "leucippotomy". The Kilburn Whitehorse ...

Review of The White Horse of Kilburn, North Yorkshire

Wonderful Wiltshire!

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, fresh air, Stone Henge
Disadvantages: So much to see you won't have long enough to do it.

minute onto the unwary shoppers beneath. Heading northeast, we come to Longleat House, home of the, quite frankly, potty, Duke of Bath. This man calls his girlfriends his "wifelets" and has made weird paper mache paintings/sculptures of them which he has stuck all over the staircase of his house, at the moment 64 of them, one for every year he's been alive. Probably more by now. Nutter. Oh yes, and there's a safari park, world's longest maze, huge gardens, a railway and the Adventure Castle, which adults are not allowed to enter unless they are supervised by a child. Heading north from here to Trowbridge, we pass one of several white horses that litter the landscape in Wiltshire. These are not the moving around, eating lots of grass, type of horse, no, these are huge drawings that are cut into the turf of the hills until you can see ...
