I first came across Thistle Bristol on a romantic weekend away with my boyfriend in 2001 We chose it because it was on special offer in the Daily Mail, and it looked fabulous in the photos. Since then we’ve been back every October to celebrate our anniversary.
Located around 1 mile from Bristol Temple Meads station, this Thistle hotel sits right in the heart of the town centre – 3 minutes walk from the main shopping centre, and 3 minutes from the nearest pubs and restaurants. Great for us because we don’t drive. Car parking is available at an extra charge.
At first sight I was very impressed! A charming Old Victorian style building. The rooms are equally impressive. The décor stays pretty much the same in each; browns, greens, yellows creams and pine furniture. The choice of the 182 rooms range from standard to executive rooms, suites and studios. As a surprise, my other half booked a premier executive suite for our second trip, oh wow! We got a HUGE room with a HUGE TV, sofa, plus bathrobes, slippers and minibar (not that I would buy anything, a can of coke was close to £2) It was very luxurious, but not worth it unless for a special occasion. All rooms have a phone with modem connection and some have a trouser press (great for business trips). A wake up call is also provided on request. Fresh fruit and water is provided every day. Plus you can request a newspaper to be delivered to your room every morning.
Breakfast (Monday to Friday 7am - 11am) (Saturday 7am - 12pm) (Sunday 8am - 12pm) was included in our package for the first trip, but we had to pay an extra £6 each for the other times. I thought it was quite reasonable considering it was a buffet consisting of full fry up, cereals, tea, coffee, juice, fruit, cakes. It had EVERYTHING, and I think I ate it all The dinning room becomes a restaurant at night, but again the prices were very expensive and we opted for a pub dinner down the road instead. We did consider room service but the £15 charge for a small chicken dish was a bit excessive also!
The hotel also boasts a small leisure club (called Otium) free of charge for hotel guests located next door to the building, with swimming pool, small gym, hot tub, steam room and sauna. Massages and other treatments are available at an extra cost. It was lovely. Towels are provided so you don’t have to take them with you, and there are excellent changing and showering facilities.
Other great things about the hotel is that there is no curfew, perfect for late nights out on the town, the reception can hold your luggage after check-out if you want to extend your day in Bristol, and leaflets are available in the lobby area.
For fantastic bargains, check out www.thistleauctions.com. Bids start from £1 and include two nights accommodation (usually weekends) and breakfast for two people. They can go for as low as £80
To sum up, we love this hotel! It’s perfect for a weekend away, and comfortable for any business trip.
