She explained this to us but did the check in paper work and told us to leave our luggage with the porters. This would leave us free to go shopping or exploring. There was no trouble checking in our luggage and we were given a ticket to allow us to collect our belongings later that day.

Yes, Shane and I were met by a doorman, and ushered into a sumptuous lobby where were greeted by a friendly female receptionist. It was noon and we were not to check in till 2pm. She explained this to us but did the check in paper work and told us to leave our luggage with the porters. This would leave us free to go shopping or exploring. There was no trouble checking in our luggage and we were given a ticket to allow us to collect our belongings later that day.
So far everything had gone smoothly…
It then changed. I was using my wheelchair, but need the toilet. I was told there were no disabled toilet avalible for public/residential use anywhere in the hotel. The female toilets were on the first floor and then up some steps. No good for anyone wheelchair bound, luckily I had my crutches so Shane helped me.
We had booked a non-smoking executive room and went back for the key at 5pm allowing the housekeeping to make up our room satisfactorily, or so we thought. Granted it was on one of the business floors but it was the same as a standard room. It consisted of one room of the following types: Double Bedded room with bathroom (our room type), but could have alternatively been a Single Bedded room with bathroom, Triple Bedded Room with bathroom. As we walked on to the fourth floor of the hotel the heat immediately hit us. It was stifling and extremely stuffy. The room was no better although it had a fan running.
On checking the room we found lots of things missing or broken, including no coffee even though it was advertised or biscuits. It had also been laid out for one person There was a broken telephone and wallpaper torn and coming off the wall. These faults I complained about to a very rude guest relation’s officer and within fifteen minutes we had more toiletries and second dressing gown, but no coffee, biscuits or new telephone. I also complained about the heat to be told ‘we do not advertise as an air condition hotel, but it does advertise air conditioning in conference rooms so when I booked on the internet I assumed the whole hotel was air condition. I was wrong and will not make that mistake again. I had to ask rather than be offered a second fan for the room too.
I also noted that there was no alarm clock in the room, as advertised, but instead you had to use the telephone, one that was not broken to set up an early wake-up call. The door way was also too small for me to get in using my wheel chair. This is certainly not compliant with the new disability laws which come into force in October 2004 as are access to the toilets that I have already mentioned and the bar will I will refer to later in this opinion. The hotel itself also advertises cable television but really that was a joke. There was no Channel Five and most of the channels offered were pay per view. There is more avalible on Freeview!
We did use Room Service. My only complaint here was that it took ages to get though to Room Service in order to order and the cost of drinks. We order a litre bottle of water, a bottle of coke and an apple juice. This came to over £10.00. It did however arrive in six, yes six minutes and there was plenty of ice supplied too. I give the hotel thumbs up here.
The Selfridge Hotel has 2 restaurants and a bar, which serve drinks, snacks and meals. Car parking is available nearby at an additional charge. I found that these two restaurants were really the same place. Fletchers Restaurant: It severed breakfast on Monday to Friday 7am - 10:30am and Saturday and Sunday 7am - 11am or Orchard Terrace which served Breakfast Monday to Friday 7am - 10:30am and Saturday and Sunday 7am - 11am. The Fletchers Restaurant was closed for lunch where are the Orchard Terrace was open daily 12:30pm - 2:30pm for a buffet and closed for dinner. Fletchers Restaurant was open daily from 5:30pm - 10:30pm. It was empty although Shane and I were advised to book a table by the reception staff. We soon found out why as it offers only a table d’hote menu of about five meat /fish dishes and only one vegetarian option with no Halal or Kosher options either. (You do need to remember that The Selfridges Hotel advertises as an international hotel and there was a large Muslim presence staying in the hotel during the night we stayed). This is not what I have come to expect from a hotel of this reputation or so called calibre. An example of this menu is as follows:
*Starter* Grilled goats cheese with mushrooms and balsamic dressing
*Main Course* Grilled tuna with ratatouille and new potatoes
*Desert* Apple and caramel pie
The Selfridge Hotel also offers a lounge service for both residents and non-residents. Breakfast: Open daily 8am - 11am, Lunch: Open daily 11am - 5pm, Afternoon Tea: Open daily 3pm - 6pm which consists of a selection of assorted finger sandwiches and fruit scones with clotted cream and preserves. (Nothing like a Cornish tea though!) and Dinner: Open daily 5pm – Midnight. There was also Stoves Pub: Open daily 12pm - 11pm but it was up the same steps as mentioned before so I did not try it out.
All in all, I personally would not say ‘The Selfridge is the perfect choice for business or leisure, combining traditional comfort with the convenience of modern facilities’ as mentioned on their website. Maybe my expectations were high, but I did expect value for money and feel I did not get it here.

...problem at the Kings X Thistle and had contacted their enquiries department by e-mail to arrange for parking. I was delighted by the fact that within one hour confirmation that a space had been reserved for me was received by e-mail. No mention of the £12.50 per night charge though (but we can’t have everything and I wasn’t being billed!)
I got lost travelling from Romford to the hotel despite using their web site for a route planner ... ...The Kings X Thistle is in a triangle shape and the car park is in the middle – what was nice is that I could see my car from my room which was quite reassuring bearing in mind the area. I’m not sure that 50% of the guests would appreciate looking over this – but hey on business class you can’t be choosy!
The room had two single beds and I could just about squash the dressing table chair between them. There was a television, ...

The Thistle Islington is situated on Kings Cross Road just a stones throw from Kings Cross mainline station (with St. Pancras next door) and the Kings Cross Thameslink station. At weekends Kings Cross Road tends not to get too busy because it leads to the business area of Holborn, etc which is quieter on those days. Just across the road there are a couple of Japanese restaurants and a convenience store which also sells magazines ... ...pretty special. The Thistle Islington is clean, convenient and comfortable - if you can get as good a deal as we did I would recommend it thoroughly.

Advantages: Friendly, helpful staff Disadvantages: They need to employ a maintenance man!
...week’s choice venue is the Thistle Hotel in London Euston –selected for its proximity to the train station given that I was arriving relatively late in the day. The Thistle is EXTREMELY close to the station, situated on the road that runs parallel to the main platforms. Wake up calls are therefore unnecessary for guests at the front of the building, as the 6.42 to Glasgow Central does that job nicely.
Upon arrival at the hotel I wondered ... ...it became apparent that the Thistle hotel had one key failing. Maintenance.
I thought it was rather strange that there was an odd-job card in with the hotel stationery, inviting guests to report faults to reception, but it soon became clear why. Upon climbing out of the bath, one of the handles on the side came off in my hand. The handle that opened the window was broken which meant that the window rattled. The tap to the wash basin was extremely ...

...the next best option, the Thistle Tower which overlooks Tower Bridge in London, (like you hadn't guessed)
Getting there from Kings Cross seemed like a hike but the tube takes you there after 2 changes at Bank and Monument to Tower Hill in around 10 minutes. (Circle or District lines will take you there).
Upon arriving from Tower Hill tube which is just a short walk from the hotel I was initially disappointed with the exterior which resembled a ... ...superb view they could have used a better architect, however it was booked so I wandered in to reception, which was bustling with people and staff.
First impressions inside were positive and staff at reception were friendly and happy to help, although I don't think English was a first language for many of them after a query concerning my booking couldn't be understood. The manager came along and cleared up the query super fast and finished the checking ...

Hi, my first review here in England.
A couple of years ago, i was in london, together with two guys of the centre, doing a series of presentations at the imperial college, a company and another university. The fact is that in Barcelona we've booked one room for the three of us, just by installing a camp bed in a double-bed room and without breakfast. At that time we couldn't spend so much money and we needed to save where we can. When we arrived ... ...booked for us. But we had the 'booking confirmation'! After looking again in their computer and checking the 'authenticity' of our confirmation ( i don't know how) they offered us a compensation. Because there were no double-bed room free for us, they offered three 'Young Executive' Single rooms, one for each of us. Including breakfast!
What a change!
Instead of tighten the three to us in a single room, we've got a single room for each one of us ...

Advantages: Car Parking, no noise, close to airport, just what was needed Disadvantages: Bit small
Well I have already done an opinion on Crete in general, the hotel I stayed in on the island, and now to continue the series another hotel opinion. This time the ThistleHotel at Gatwick airport was the first place of stop for the holiday.
General
*******
Well it may not be the most stylish place to begin a great holiday, but it was sort of essential. We had a flight from London Gatwick airport to Crete’s capital Heraklion for 7:35 in the morning. Coming from the Westcounty it would be a long 3-hour drive to Gatwick to make that sort of time in the morning flight, and not liking early mornings anyway a hotel for the previous night looked a good option. Gatwick airport has several hotels from large chains, so there was plenty of choice. For no particular reason we chose the ThistleHotel. Ok, so we went of a good reputation ...
Advantages: Good locations, good offers for weekend breaks, pleasant rooms Disadvantages: Can be a bit samey from one hotel to the next. Staff unsure of how to handle complaints
Thistle is a company that seem to be trying to improve themselves. I've used their hotels for weekend breaks a few times now and on the whole I'm pleased with my experience. They are easy to book - a central reservations telephone line and easy to check into.
I've had an executive room a few times via an upgrade which was given for the same price as a standard. These rooms were airconditioned with big comfy beds. The bath rooms are pleasant and you get all the usual free cosmetic treats and a fluffy white bath robe.
I've stayed in London at the Charing Cross hotel and had no complaints at all. A very professionally run hotel.
The only problems I've encountered have been at the Bristol Thistle. While the building looks lovely and inviting on a hot weekend it can be stifling in the reception as there is no air conditioning. We ...
