I booked this hotel as part of a birthday present for my boyfriend. We were going to watch a concert in the evening and I wanted a hotel with good facilities such as a pool, sauna etc to chill out in during the day.
There are not many hotels in Manchester with these facilities so I went for the Thistle as it was alot cheaper than other hotels with a pool, jacuzzi and sauna. I paid £79 for one night at the weekend.
We arrived about 1.30pm and although it states check in is at 2 o'clock we thought we would try a bit earlier. The staff on reception were very friendly and checking in that bit early was not a problem. The reception is quite elegant looking with security on the door of an evening and a restaurant and bar, which we didnt use.
We were given our key card and went up to the room. I was a bit aprehansive as I had read other reviews that had said the rooms were terrible, but I had heard from a friend they were ok and thats why decided to give it a try.
We had a room with a window although from reading other reviews I know this is not the case with all rooms. Our window backed onto a side street with another building directly infront so the view was nothing spectacular. It was also a bit grubby, but that has to be expected from a high building in a city.
The room had a big double, comfy bed with a bedside table at each side. There was a TV in the room with the usual channels BBC1 etc. There were films that could be paid for if you wanted, they were about £8 for 2 films.
The bathroom had a shower and bath combined, which was average. The hotel is quite old and the bathrooms could do with some refurbishment.
The hotel had a gym, pool, sauna and jacuzzi in the basement which was included in the price of your stay. However it was only very small and would not recommend staying here to anyone that is looking specifically for these facilities.
The suite was empty when we went down, which was a good job as couldn't fit many in there! The member of staff was very friendly and helpful. The gym had about 6 pieces of equipment, and was used by one person while we were there. The saunas are in the changing rooms and are therefore single sex only. The jacuzzi was of a fair size but dont know how comfortable it would have been if there were more than 2-3 people in there at a time! It runs on a timer so you cant sit with the jets on all time. The pool was very small not really able to swim in it as it was a curved shape and you could swim across in about 4 strokes!
We did not spend any more time in the hotel after that until coming back to sleep. There are a number of bars nearby which are nice bars. On arriving back to the hotl the security ensured we were def staying at the hotel before letting us in and although we had hard reports that due to the hotel being located next to a side road it can be noisey we did not experience any problems such as this.
Overall I dont think the Thistle is worth the money they charge especially as sometimes the rooms can be over £110! The rooms are very average in need of some refurbishment, if your only after a basic hotel in a great location and are willing to pay the money for it then the Thistle is for you.
If I was only looking for basic facilities as this hotel has, I personally would look to pay a bit less in another hotel.
Location
The ideal location, situated on Portland street at the end nearest to Piccadilly station but only a brisk 5-7 minute walk from Oxford Street station. This hotel overlooks Piccadilly gardens and the newly aquired ice rink , looking fantastic at moment lit up with fairy lights. Straight facing the chorlton street bus station and metrolink system
The Hotel
My visit to this hotel was unfortunatley business not pleasure, however I would definatley ... ...right hand side as you walk in, with the restaurant to the left. When checking it we were greeted by very polite staff who informed us of all the facilities available, the dining times and the security procedures on an evening. The hotel was pre-booked and paid for by work but it was £89.00 for the room per night for bed and breakfast. Evening meal was available at the public restaurant .
There are two fair sized lifts available to take you up the ...

Advantages: Top Location Disadvantages: Over Priced
I booked this hotel for myself and my partner to stay in after a night out in Manchester back in February. I booked it fairly last minute on the internet and as it was for a Saturday night I didn't expect a bargain but this room cost over £100. However as it was the only double room I could find I booked it, needless to stay I was more than annoyed when I arrived to find we would be staying in a twin room.
The hotel is in an ideal location, there ... ...minutes and Piccadilly station just a 5 minute walk. However we found we were able to walk to everywhere we wanted to go, the shops are a couple of minutes away and there are several bars along Portland Street. You are also within a 10 minute walk of areas such as the Gay village, Deansgate Locks and the Printworks.
The hotel itself is fairly dated, the decor is traditional and it could do with a lick of paint. We took the lift to our room as it ...

Advantages: women friendly, comfortable Disadvantages: inside room no windows, quite pricey!
WHY DID I BOOK?
i booked it for my mum when she came down for a few days. i wanted somewhere near our flat and close to local amenitites like market street, galleries, train and tram stations.
WHERE IS IT?
city centre literally on piccadily gardens. 5-10 mins walk from piccadily station. 2 mins from bus station and piccadily and market street tram stations. right at the end of portland street close to china town and ring road.
BENEFITS
I felt ... ...night they checked everyone going into or out of the hotel. keeping lone women safe at night is really important to them. it was very clean and tidy. the hotel itself is very attractive especially at night.
my mum was nervous about going to breakfast by herself so we ordered it to her room. NEGATIVES
it was quite expensive. i paid £120 each night and it was a monday and tuesday in mid-january. it was cheaper to get a twin rather than a single. ...

Advantages: Location, good sized rooms Disadvantages: Not very clean, prices
...As a travel agent I tend to get offered preferential rates at certain hotels, this is usually to try and fill up empty rooms in their hotels. One year everyone in our department decided to have a girly New Year in Manchester and I was given the job of organising the hotel and at New Year it is not the easiest of tasks.
The Thistle Hotel offered special rates to agents of £25 per room, this I thought would be ideal as I needed to make an agent's booking I had to use the dedicated agent's booking line to make the reservation which works in a similar way to telephone reservations for the general public, alternatively the Thistle Hotel has an online booking system to make a reservation.
A Brief guide to making a reservation:-
My tip is to first visit the website to check the online availability of the room then you save yourself a few...

Advantages: in town centre, good food & restaurant staff Disadvantages: expensive and smelly
...I have to go up to Manchester about 3 times a year and I have a B&B allowance of &70. In Autumn I chose the Thistle using the Virtual Manchester Tourist site and multimap to pin point it, also it was a sugested hotel from the company I work for.
We have used Thistle hotels before and found them to be of a high standard.
Regrettably my Manchester experience was a disaster: the room was tiny and smelled mouldy and of stale cigarettes - maybe that's what they keep for lone females! Also the view out the window was basically a wall. The room's walls were thin and my neighbours both in and out of the hotel were noisy. I rang down and complained but to no avail - I didn't hear anyone come up to check either. Eventually I got dressed and went down and copmlained and they said that they would ring up: they may have done but no result. By this...
