There's a section of www.thomascook.com that every traveller will find useful whether you are going with Thomas Cook themselves or not.

If you click on the ‘Foreign Exchange’ button on the left hand side of the screen - which may take a while to load 'cause it's a big site - you will be transported to a magical place that charges you 0% commission on your currency exchanges!

This applies to cash or travellers cheques in any of the listed currencies. All they charge is a £5 flat fee and for that you can get anywhere between £250 and £2000 worth of any currency delivered by registered post and if ordered before midday it will arrive the next working day.

The site is laid out thus:

You start at the 'Select Product' drop down box where you can select either currency or travellers cheques.

You then move on to the 'Select Currency' drop down box where you can choose any of the twenty six available. This then brings up the current conversion showing you how many you would get for your British pound.

The 'Enter Stirling Amount' box is used to input the amount you want converted into the foreign currency. With this done you press the 'Quote' button and the calculated amount magically arrives in the 'Converted Amount' box.

This figure is not a direct calculation however... they Foreign currency amount is rounded to the nearest banknote and so the amount you wanted to spend is adjusted accordingly. This can be either up or down but you have the choice to change it.

With this done you click on 'Add To My Order' and you can then either select more currencies or go and pay!

This can be used to it’s max when, say, you’re going round Europe and you could get some Francs, some Deutschmarks, some Lira etc… all for this single £5 fee!

There are only two potential downsides to this.

1. You have to be at home to sign for the delivery when it arrives.

2. I live down near London but am currently staying up in Scotland. My bank account is still registered to my home address and because of this it is the only address they could deliver to. I got a phone call at work regrettably informing me they couldn’t complete the transaction….

At least you know that security isn’t going to be a problem! :)

If we compare that to what you would normally have to do... go in and queue up in a store with the usual 2% commission charges on both cash and travellers cheques then the net option can work out a hell of a lot cheaper!

Granted somebody, somewhere, is going to have a special offer on and if you are able to shop around may find a better deal! I think the Post Office offers 0% commission from time to time for example... If however you are one of the thousands of people that have succumbed to the ease and convenience of Internet shopping then this is definately something for you!

Anyway I have used this service many times before and have always found it very useful and very economical. It saves the hassle of having to go into a branch and it can work out a hell of a lot cheaper too!

So if you’re going anywhere in the future, near or far, I would recommend this website because it’s simple, easy and cheap… three of my favourite words! :)

Dave

P.S. Interesting bit of trivia for you... My wife and I have recently returned from Ireland and to my surprise I found out you can’t get Irish travellers cheques… bizarre!

What you deal with you deal with comprehensively and so although this isn't about Thomas Cook as a whole I think it deserves a Very Helpful rating, whatever some others think. Well done, Timmy.
