I recently made a return flight ORY-CVT-ORY. Check in at ORY is cold and efficient. Travelling with a friend I asked if we could sit together. "You will sit where the computer puts you unless you pay" was the friendly reply. Otherwise fairly uneventful trip to CVT except for passport control being delayed for 10 minutes by a fire alarm at CVT. The return trip however left me feeling very bitter. Check in was more like enrolling in a penitentiary than being treated as customers of an airline. When I arrived at the check in desk a poor French student who spoke little English was being aggressed because he had not understood the baggage weight rules correctly. The poor guy was forced to pay £60 for 10 kg overweight, and to add insult to injury, he was then informed he would be charged an additional £5 for using his credit card to pay! Then it was my turn. I had one small bag containing my camcorder and another weighing 8.6kg and containing breakable items of pottery. My friend had a bag of similar weight and a very small back bag. "You've each got 2 bags - you can only take one". Observation of rules surpasses any form of logic for employees of Thomsonfly (& probably their management too - but they certainly understand a thing or 2 about stealth) so 2 bags had to be compressed into one - of course to be separated again once on board. So beware, ladies, if you're carrying a handbag that's your lot! Once on board we were read the riot act by the crew. I'm glad that Thomsonfly take antisocial behaviour seriously and take action against those who engage in it, but I find it offensive to be reminded of such as a normal law abiding passenger. Now a word about stealth as practised by Thomsonfly: At first a very low fare appeared to which various supplements were added. I accept that it is normal practice to add government and airport taxes to the fare. However to charge a separate fuel surcharge is dishonest. Fuel should be included in the basic fare. Why not a supplement for the captain's new uniform? - it would be equally ludicrous. When booking a flight from France with EasyJet, no supplement is charged for using a 'Carte Bleue' Visa card. So either Thomsonfly are thieves or their financial department is completely incompetent in their relationships with their bankers and thus the unfortunate passenger is ripped off by a further 8.50 Euros. Rather than being treated as a customer on a commercial service my overall impression is one of being treated as a naughty schoolboy on the end of year excursion. Thomsonfly is not overall a pleasant experience, and other comments have given opinion of the exiguity of the seats without me adding to this. If I can avoid them in future I will.
