...we decided to visit the Tierpark (or zoo) in Bern, to appease our two year old who had been dragged around the aforementioned mountains, lakes and cities.
We found a lovely place to park by the river on the road (Thormannstrasse) leading to the zoo. This area has the most parking spaces and a smaller hill to climb to get to the zoo, so aim for this area if you are coming in by car. If coming in by foot or by bus, the Tierpark is about 1.5 km south ... ...on her toddler legs. The Tierpark is not particularly accessible to disabled or elderly visitors as both entrances have large hills to climb, with quite uneven paths.
At the top of the hill is the deer area, although we only saw two or three sad looking bucks wandering around…not enough to distract us from our main goal and we walked through the gate to the zoo. Outside the entrance is a shallow pool, home to a few ducks and a flock of flamingos ...
