Tijuana (Mexico)

Tijuana (Mexico)

I spent the summer of 2003 working in California and during that time, I paid several visits across the border to Tijuana. When I told my work colleagues I was planning a trip, I was greeted with various, mostly negative reactions. "I hope they let you back into the states" "The police ... Read review

Tequila and table dancing in Tijuana, Mexico

Advantages: Good shopping, bars and clubs
Disadvantages: Can be sleazy

...bribes".

Tijuana is notorious for trouble and has a bad reputation amongst lots of Americans, who will no doubt have a story about "a friend of a friend who was arrested for crossing the street and has never been seen again" but my opinion is that, it is fine to visit as long as you are sensible.

Americans do not require a passport to cross the mexican border, ...
...security conscious. The border at Tijuana is said to be the busiest in the world, and illegal immigration is a big problem so be prepared for a wait!

My experiences at the border was that when entering Mexico there are no controls whatsoever. When leaving Mexico, on one visit, we waited for 2 hours before we went through. At other times, which were very early mornings, we near enough walked through.

not only "vice and sin"

Advantages: *****
Disadvantages: -

...just kept the control of Tijuana after the Mexican revolution.. From 1915 this city became a destination for some Americans of San Diego that come here for horse races and cockfights, to bet in the casinos. Then, two years later, the Government of California decided ti shut-down all cabarets and Tijuana was ready to open them on its territory and the number of people from San Diego increased a lot. Tijuana become the "wildest in the wild" when ...
...preferred destination. Also nowadays Tijuana is the destination, during the weekend, for the young Californians that come here to satisfy their thirst of alcoholics (this is not really something to imitate) as in California you must be 21 to order an alcoholic drink. Youths and elders run to Tijuana and fill the "lap dance" premises as they are more permissive than in California. In conclusion Tijuana is a frontier town that has kept during the ...

wildest of the wild

Advantages: lively, can never get bored
Disadvantages: none

...looking for a wild time, Tijuana is the place to be. Cabarets, bull-fighting, casinos, cock-fighting, horse racing and a never ending night life. Tijuana has it all!!!!!!!!! Attractions I would like to start off with bull-fighting. Normally, I would have to say this isn't a sport I aprove of. I haven't changed my mind on that but it was very interesting to watch. I have to admit, I got caught up in the enthusiasm of the crowd. You see a man all ...
...Rock. You can't go to Tijuana without gong here. It has these shooter girls and dancers all dressed in these amazing outfits. It has a hollwood feel to it. A place called El Jardin is only open on Fridays and it plays classic rock music. Oh yes, and I do need to mention that if you enjoyed the rodeo during the day and want to see more, you can. At Rodeo Santa Fe you'll find live indoor rodeo up untill around midnight. Dinning My favourite place ...

Tijuana - See it once it's worth it.

Advantages: Good bargins in shops. Easy to get to from San Diego, and the food is great.
Disadvantages: nope, can't think of any

...short drive, you are in Tijuana main street. The bus service was ecxellent and very regular. The town centre is basically one long street with shops, bars, restraunts etc. We did wander down a couple of the side streets, but turned back after not finding anything of interest. Mind you with no guide book with us, and no information about the place at all, I think it's a safe bet we missed out on a lot of the town. What we did see though was great. ...
...shops are a lot cheaper than the equivalent just a few minutes across the border. One example was a Quiksilver shop, whos prices were about half that of the same chain in the States. There were plenty of places to eat and drink, and these were also very reasonable. In one shop I picked up a bottle of mescal, complete with worm for $2 (about £1.50), and amazingly it was drinkable !!!! One of the highlights for me (I'd never been to Mexico before) ...

A Spanish Jewel...

Advantages: gorgeous city, not an expensive city
Disadvantages: ...busy???

San Diego was sadly the last destination on our itinerary for our holiday (except a day trip to Tijuana in Mexico). In Spanish, a "La Jolla" is a jewel. San Diego is set around a gracefully curving bay in Southern California and we were staying in La Jolla (pronounced La Hoya). After traveling non-stop around the West Coast of America, we promised ourselves a restful 9 days and this is exactly what we did! La Jolla is an elegant beach community just to the North of San Diego City and it claims some of the finest beaches in the city. I recommend a visit to La Jolla Cove, where the clear water is perfect for snorkelling and seal sighting! Many of our mornings were spent watching the surfers tackling the fluctuating waves, these can be much too strong for novices. San Diego is claimed to be Americas "finest city" and this is very hard to ...

SUN, SEA AND SAN DIEGO

Advantages: a lovely way to start a fly drive holiday
Disadvantages: The flight from the U.K. is approximately 11 hours

and touch the dolphins. The Zoo is world famous and is well worth a look. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes as it is very tiring and has many steep hills. You can take a trip into Mexico, Tijuana. This is not for the faint hearted. Although there is some excellent shopping to be had and some good fun bargaining with the traders, the visible signs of poverty are at every turn. It is hard to believe you are only a few miles away from one of the richest countries in the world. Keep your wits about you. All in all, San Diego offers good food, good hotels and a laid back atmosphere. There was no evidence of the “rat race” here. A destination well worth considering. ...

history, culture, and great sunbathing

Advantages: sunshine, choice of lounging by the pool or seeing a bit of culture
Disadvantages: not great for women on their own

are often subject to unwelcome looks and comments from the local men -- presumably because their own women wouldn't tolerate such things, so they see us as easy prey! It turned out that I had nothing to worry about apart from a few stares, but I would not recommend this country as somewhere for a woman travelling alone. It made me feel a lot safer to have my boyfriend on my arm. Our first trip to the medina for some souvenir shopping wasn't at all as bad as I thought, either. Of course we were hassled to buy things we didn't want, and my boyfriend was grabbed by the arm several times as salemen attempted to lure him into their shops, but it could have been a lot worse (having experienced the sales pitches in Tijuana, Mexico, this paled in comparison!). Don't be fooled into paying the asking price for anything -- you are expected to ...
