Mother nature at her best

Advantages: Unique and breathtaking views, fantastic demonstrations
Disadvantages: None worth mentioning

Timanfaya National Park is set on the most easterly Canary Island, Lanzarote. It can be found to the west of the island, nearby the town of Yaiza.

Lanzarote originally rose from the sea in the form of a mass of volcanoes so it's understandable that to this day the island is still home to a lot of volcanoes - more than 300 infact. Some of these volcanoes have blown and some of them are still very much alive. Timanfaya National Park ...
.../> I have been to Timanfaya National Park numerous times, sadly - I have a 'thing' for volcanos, I just find them really interesting (although I think this was originally sparked by the Timanfaya experience). However I will be basing this review on the last time I visited in May 2009.

The island is small (only 37 miles long and 12 miles wide) so it is easy to find Timanfaya National Park. It is also signposted up well once you get ... more

Be Inspired On The Mountain Of Fire!

Advantages: Spectacular Landscape and Scenery
Disadvantages: Journey Can Be Quite treacherous

...The History of Timanfaya Timanfaya is a vast area covering 200 Square Kilometres of active Volcanoes, where successive eruptions have created an almost apocalyptic type of landscape. The most significant volcanic eruptions in recent history occurred here during the 18th Century and in particular during the period 1730-1736 and again in 1824, when a large area of the island of Lanzarote was destroyed. We went to Timanfaya on a coach but it can be ...
...The Parque Nacional de Timanfaya to give it its Spanish name was created in 1968 and the whole area is now a protected area of Scientific Importance. There are over 180 different species of plants found here, some of which are rare and found nowhere else in the world. Since the volcanic eruptions of over 200 years old human presence within this whole area has been virtually nil. At Islote de Hilario there is a regular display for the tourist coaches ...

Go back in time....

Advantages: Breathtaking views
Disadvantages: Can be tricky with cars, walking etc.

...still wanted to go to Timanfaya National Park, or Fire Mountain as its known. From our apartments the coach journey took around 30 mins which took us past the salt flats with the National Park in the distance. At the entrance to the National Park you are greeted by a sign in the shape of the devil which was made and designed by Cesar Manrique who lived on the island and for many street furniture items, buildings etc. are either made or designed by ...
...the car and coach parking is is breathtaking (and that's just before you start the tour!). Before going on the coach tour you are shown a variety of experiments that the volcanic earth can do. Firstly you are given some stones, which you are told are cool, but are burning hot, this is because the heat is just below the surface of where you are standing, yet in other places its much, much lower. The next experiment is where a tumbleweed catches fire ...

Timanfaya National Park

Advantages: A must see of the island - great views
Disadvantages: Limited access - Tour coach and limited private car hire access ( must walk after a while! haha)

On a recent holiday to the island of Lanzarote, listening to other peoples experiences we felt it was a must to visit the islands national park of Timanfaya. The coach ride was approx 20mins from where we were stayin in Playa Blanca (the southern tip of the island). We were greeted at the entrance of the park by a carving of the devil (the symbol of the park) the parks restaurant is a must see, experiencing the heat of the huge circular grill, which ...
...due to magma still being in the chamber below the earth surface (very uncommon) this lets the open grill achieve temperatures of around 300C. We also experienced experiments using the volcanos heat including holding the volcanic stone which was still hot and we were asked to hold the stone as long as we could! Very hot so wasnt held for long! haha water was also poured down a 20ft tube in the ground and within a couple of seconds the water shot up ...

Spectacular views great for geogarapgy lovers

Advantages: Great attracation to visit stunning views.
Disadvantages: Not good if you get vertigo!

Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote is a great trip! Whether on a coach journey with your hotel or visiting independantly you are sure to have a great day out! When you reach Timanfaya (an active volcano on the island) you can travel half way up! here there is a cafe/resturant where they cook food over a pit dug down on the mountain! Here you can also see water put down holes and they sqirt out steam! You can also see just how hot the mountain ...
...drive up is very hairaising! Throughout the journey is a comentary in many lanuages (including English) that outlines the geograhical history of timanfaya and the island. Lanzarote

Advantages: relaxing
Disadvantages: not a lot to do

Lanzarote has something for everyone. The volcanic landscape is so spectacular that is seems from another planet in fact it was the setting for 'The planet of the apes'. A must when visiting Lanzarote is The Timanfaya national park where you are taken on a guided coach tour of the fire mountains with the opportunity to view amazing scenery. However if this is not you cup of tea Lanzarote also offers fabulous weather and glorious beaches and at night there is plenty of entertainment for all, including bars, restaurants and nightclubs. ...

Timanfaya National Park.

Advantages: Excellent views, Typical lunar landscape.
Disadvantages: Not able to walk anywhere

As a visitor to this part of the island I found that it could be like being on the moon. This is my favourite tourist attraction of the island, and cannot be missed. The Mountains of Fire in the Timanfaya National Park are not named through any creative act of poetic licence; they have justified their title through a spectacular demonstration of the dramatic forces of nature during the hundreds of violent, lava-spewing volcanic eruptions during 1730 - 1736. As the number one visitor attraction in Lanzarote, Timanfaya National Park, covering some 51 square kilometres on the west coast, never fails to astonish it's sightseeing public, from the multi-coloured badlands with its eerily smoking craters, to the lunar wilderness stretching hazily to the distant farms and the sea beyond. The region was declared a National Park in 1974 ...

I love Lanzarote! ...Fact!

Advantages: Great weather, great scenery, all round great holiday!
Disadvantages: None!

stay when I visit. It is a quiet town, on the east of the island and around a 15 minute drive from the airport. There are plenty of shops, resturants and sandy beaches there. It is nearby Teguise which is a small, traditional town with lots of cobbled streets, old buildings and churches to discover. Every Sunday morning Teguise is home to a huge, traditional market where you can pick up pretty much anything. So what else is there to do and see in Lanzarote? A must do is Timanfaya National Park which is situated on the north west side of the island. I took this paragraph from discoverlanzarote.com - "The Montaņas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) were created between 1730 and 1736 when more than 100 volcanoes, covering more than 50 kmē, rose up and devastated this part of the island (including several villages)". You drive right out into ...
