This is the most exciting part of New York. The part that you can't wait to see. You've seen it on so many films and TV programmes and can't wait to see it in real life. And yes, it is just as amazing in the flesh.
This was the first proper sightseeing part of our trip we did and as soon as we caught a glimpse of it, it was like, wow we're in New York. You can see it from way up the street where our hotel was and as we gradually became closer and closer to it, we could feel our hearts beating faster and faster, our smiles getting bigger and bigger and the spring in our step getting more and more bouncy with excitement.
The main attraction is all the huge signs and lights that make it so bright and colourful and it is absolutely jam-packed full of these, all over every single building, advertising everything from hit Broadway shows to Sean John's latest aftershave; the newest pair of sneakers to a cold pint of Budweiser; a popular bank to a recent cinema release. The amount of photos I took just of all the signs was incredible! It really is like what you see on TV.

You can find out what time the office opens each day on the signs outside but you need to get there early as the queues end up circling round the square. You can climb up the stairs that take you onto the top of the TKTS office to get an even better vantage point for those precious photos. You can take a seat and watch all the going-ons around you at the bottom of the steps, although it was too cold to do this when we were there.
You will be completely overwhelmed by the amount of shops, bars and places to eat which cover anything and everything you could possibly think of. sbarro is a tasty and good value place to eat which does mainly pizza and pasta. A small taster of some of the other places to eat are TGI Friday, ESPN Zone (see my other review on this), all the usual take away places as well as some more upmarket eateries and the typical American diners. There are literally hundreds of shops including M&M World (oh my god I can't believe there's a shop full of M&M products!) and Toys "R" Us with its 60ft Ferris Wheel inside. If you're lucky enough you might catch one of the occasional visiting attractions to Times Square - the Naked Cowboy - a hunky and muscley Yank who walks around the Square wearing just a pair of Y fronts and playing his guitar. You get the privilege of having your picture taken with him and he's so funny and nice. He picked me up and pretended to walk away with me while my husband was taking the picture!
At night it is an even more amazing sight when all the lights are lit up with hundreds of different colours and you just can't take your eyes away. We found that the Square is slightly smaller than we thought, a bit smaller than what it looks like on TV, but in no way does this take away from the fascination of it.
Times Square is at the heart of the theatre district with many theatres on the Square and Broadway only in the next street. A few blocks north of Times Square is Central Park and a short walk south will take you to Macy's, Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building.
The famous newspaper the New York Times used to be located at the main intersection of Times Square at the New York Times Tower. This is where the crystal ball drops at midnight every New Years Eve, as it has since the building opened in 1906.
"The city that never sleeps" - of Times Square, this is true.
Advantages: can get cheap Tickets to most Broadway shows Disadvantages: overcrowded; drowning in advertisements; upsettingly expensive restaurants and stores
Good ole Times Square. I don't know the exact dimensions of this entire area, but I would say it covers midtown beginning from 39th street going all the way to 60th. From the east to the west, it stretches from 5th avenue all the way to 9th. At one point in its history, it was the best hang out place in NYC. And then, it fell from society's moral expectations. During the 80's and early 90's, the square became Manhattan's red light district.
The ... ...wasn't until the 90's that Times had turned into the advertising behemoth that it is now.
I was working at the penthouse of 487 5th avenue in mid 90's. These were the times when big corporations such as Disney and Warner had already begun the process of buying the adult stores and turning them into overpriced shopping centers. And it was at this time that I had discovered the last remnant of the oldest Times Square still in existence -- something ...

Advantages: Bright lights, great atmosphere, great shops! Disadvantages: A little crowded around the holidays (but thats expected)
...do you start when describing Times Square? There are so many things to say, so I must try to organise my thoughts. I apologise in advance if I jump around, but I get excited when talking about New York in general.
I have been to New York twice, once last year and then again for New Year's Eve this year. Let me tell you, what a difference! Because of the unfortunate events in September of 2001, Times Square was near enough empty when I visited in ... ...spirits high even during those times when I physically felt like collapsing. Whilst my knees were about to buckle any second, my eyes continuously gazed at everything going on. The neon lights are amazing and, in my opinion, not at all tacky looking like some places. The central point is of course the giant smoking cup-a-soup (pot noodle) and tilting budweiser bottle. Above these, was a huge screen to show a closer look at the crystal ball that dropped ...

Advantages: Amazing atmosphere, & plenty of major shops. Disadvantages: None I can think of!
...is exactly how I found Times Square! There was so much life there, and it's such a great atmosphere! The biggest Virgin Megastore is situated here, and it's a must to visit for any music fan. It has everything you could possible think of!
Theres alot of places to eat around here, including the 24 hour McDonalds. You'll never go hungry there! If your looking for tickets for Broadway shows, the TKTS booth (just underneath the famous Coca-Cola sign) ... ...Good Morning America etc. then they'll be able to provide you with the full list.
The bus terminal is just a few blocks up (about a 10 minute walk), and Times Square is an amazing place to see lit up a night. It's really is amazing to see. ...

Advantages: Been There Done That Disadvantages: Tourism and Over Crowding
...is why tourists head to Times Square, like moths heading to light!
Times Square is a busy, stressful and fairly dull place to 'hang-out' while in the city. Although it does attract a few great landmarks and can be a fun photo opportunity - it is nothing to get overly excited about.
Area's such as the Lower east side and Soho are now attracting many more tourists due to the regeneration and introduction of many new stylish bars, shops and restaurants. ... ...the glitter and sparkle of Times Square then I shall leave you with this invaluable tip...
Find the tourist information centre in Times Square. It is one of the only places with public bathrooms, and trust me you're gonna need to use them at least once.
Also, don't forget to track down the (semi) Naked Cowboy for that photo opportunity.
Yee Ha! ...

Advantages: Great photo stop and buzzing atmosphere Disadvantages: lots of crowds
...time. Even at night time Times Square was still very active and loads going on. There is plenty to do and its suitable for all ages. There was alot of crowds even for march time, but that was expected. I would advise people with children to watch out as a child could be easily lost. There was alot of restaurants and shops about. We went to Hard Rock cafe and thought it was well worth the money the food was lovely.
Also there was the M&M shop which ... ...loved the atompshere about Times Square it always seemed to be buzzing plus I found myself watching the advertisements for ages as they are so huge! The MTV studios are here but to be honest there wasnt much happening about them when I was there. Its definately a great photo stop! ...

Advantages: Fantastic Location - you couldn't wish for a nicer part of the city to stay in Disadvantages: Reception staff are a little unfriendly - DO NOT USE THE IN ROOM PHONE!!!!!!
I visited The Westin in October 2005 as a gift from my parents for my 21st birthday, they treated myself and my boyfriend to a 5 night stay in a superior room. I'll start by giving you some afcts about the hotel and then i'll give you my experience.
The Westin NewYork at TimesSquare is on the corner of 43rd Street and 8th Avenue, it has 863 rooms and 126 club rooms and suites. It has a restaurant (shula's steak house) a bar (bar 10) and a coffee shop that does eat in and take away (Cosi's). It has 24 hour room service, a gym and spa, a ticket desk and a gift shop.
My trip to the hotel:
On arrival to the hotel my first impressions were very good the hotel was an amazingly tall and colourful building, very very modern looking, we were greeted by really friendly porters who took our bags from us and then we made our way upstairs to ...
Advantages: Great food, huge portions, value for money Disadvantages: a bit busy at lunchtime
I visited NewYork in April this year and had always wanted to go to TGI Fridays just to try it out and see if there was any difference to the ones I had been to in Scotland and wasnt disappointed. I found the food excellent value for money considering the portion sizes you get which are huge and the staff were friendly and helpful and couldnt do enough. Try the NewYork Cheescake which is fantastic. Great atmosphere watching the goings on in TimesSquare just added to an overall great NewYork experience. Great place to park your shopping bags while you enjoy a well earned break and have refreshing drink from their many choices on the menu before the shopping begins again. ...
Advantages: heavenly beds, bath, position and views Disadvantages: expensive so get a deal as they are out there if you look
we as a family stayed here for 3 nights - we joined the starwood preferred guest club so to get points, upgrades and deals, we got 3 nights for the price of 2 and paid something like $600 for the stay, we also got upgraded to a higher floor
The hotel itself is ideally situated just one block down from timessquare, it's in a very good area and it's safe, if you go up 43rd street towards timessquare you are sort of round the back to the theaters where there are some tramps sleeping but they are harmless and the police are always about - if you are worried about this at all then go up 42nd street instead. The hotel is a bit ugly from the outside, it's seems to be trying to make a statement but it misses on so many levels, it just looks like an unfinished 80's style building
anyhow, location is great, the hotel itself is big ...
