Don't get me wrong, I used to live in New York and I'm a big fan of the city. But what I will never understand is why tourists head to Times Square, like moths heading to light!
Times Square is a busy, stressful and fairly dull place to 'hang-out' while in the city. Although it does attract a few great landmarks and can be a fun photo opportunity - it is nothing to get overly excited about.
Area's such as the Lower east side and Soho are now attracting many more tourists due to the regeneration and introduction of many new stylish bars, shops and restaurants. They are safe areas and full of gret personalities who can be very welcoming to visitors.
But you want Theatre right?
Well yes you can pay over the odds to see a Musical or spend hours in line waiting for cheap tickets... but why not check out some great off-broadway or off-off broadway productions? The real New York harbours some of the best creative talent in the world and most of them premier their works of art & drama in the Villages smaller theatre's, art houses and coffee shops. Why not see a top star perform in a 300 seat playhouse? Discover a new artist before they get huge? Pick up a bargain in China Town? Or simply 'hang-out' in some of the coolest real-life movie sets on the planet?
One day I was walking through China Town and noticed a lot of people wandering into a warehouse. There was no signage, or attendant - so my curiosity got the better of me. I discovered that inside was a free, secret exhibition of installation art by the Queen of pop, Madonna. It is these hidden gems that make New York a great place.
If you do chose to remain loyal to the glitter and sparkle of Times Square then I shall leave you with this invaluable tip...
Find the tourist information centre in Times Square. It is one of the only places with public bathrooms, and trust me you're gonna need to use them at least once.
Also, don't forget to track down the (semi) Naked Cowboy for that photo opportunity.
