Advantages: Gardens at Villa d'Este, Villa Adriana Disadvantages: built on a hill, lots of uphill (and downhill) walking!

As for Tivoli itself, it is quite a small and pleasant town. There are a few great restaurants in which to have lunch, and a small cathedral, it probably isn't worth going out of your way to see.. there is a positively labyrinthine network of small streets, so if you do venture out to explore, a map would be a good investment (I learnt this lesson the hard way!).

Tivoli is a reasonably-sized town, located just outside Rome, and is built on the side of a (quite steep!) hill. It is most famous for the two villas there, being a favourite retreat, since Roman times, for the rich and famous inhabitants of Rome.
Villa Adriana lies a little distance outside the centre of Tivoli, however, there are buses linking it to Rome, and to the town centre (and the Villa d'Este). It was built by the Emperor Hadrian, and covers acres of grounds, mostly in ruins, the remaining site retains a fascinating interest, especially if you are interested in ancient history, and if you are not, it's a really great place for a picnic! There is a lot of walking involved, so if you go, be prepared. The entrance cost is 8000L (about £2.60) and you can easily lose a few hours here. It opens until dusk so remember if you go in the winter, that it will close early. There is a small car-park if you chose to make your own way.
As you go up to the main town, the Villa d'Este is located nearer the city centre. It is quite unassuming as you approach, and again, it also costs 8000L to go in. The Villa itself was built by Ippolito d'Este in the 16th Century, a member of the famous (or rather, infamous) Borgia family. The Villa itself is fairly sparse now, although there are some great mosaics, the main feature of Villa d'Este, are the gardens. For anyone with even a passing interest in gardens and/or fountains, this really is a must-see place. It has some of the most beautiful fountains in Italy (which is saying a lot!), and now, the fountains are working again. It really is an amazing sight, because there are masses of the things!

It is a great place for a day trip and definitely recommended, if you are holidaying in Rome.
In 1550 Cardinal Hippolyte d'Este, the son of Lucretia Borgia and Alfonso I d'Este, built Villa d'Este following the project of Pirro Ligorio. The Villa is reputed to stand on the site of an ancient medieval district called "Valle Gaudente". The magnificent fountains are fed by the waters of the Aniene through a series of pipes which pass under the historical centre.
The courtyard, which corresponds to the present entrance of the Villa, was the ... ...of the Villa. The Italian-style garden with its beautiful fountains is a splendid example of the Renaissance gardens' art and architecture. The most famous fountains are: the Fountain of the Bicchierone (Large Glass), the One Hundred Fountains, the Fountain of the Ovato, the Fountain of the Dragons and the Fountain of the Hydraulic Organ (where a perfectly functioning organ was placed). ...

It is also known as the "Villa of Manlio Vopisco" who was the owner of the destroyed villa during the Roman age. Its rare beauty is due to the naturalistic aspects which exalt the presence of the waters of the Aniene river. One can admire: the Great Waterfall on tha Aniene river (more than 100m. high) impetuously coming out from the artificial tunnels dug in 1826 after the catastrophic flood of the river; the caves of Neptune and of the Sirens where ...

Advantages: Position, cleanliness, staff Disadvantages: None although may be too quiet for some

Villa D'Este - 9 Euro per person - in the centre of Tivoli this was originally a convent but remodelled in 1500s. I didn't find the villa itself very interesting but the gardens are absolutely fantastic with steep terraces and amazing fountains, some of which are set to music.
Villa Gregoriana (not visited) - this is on the other side of Tivoli and is set in a wooded valley.
Overall
Having stayed in numerous 3 star hotels in Italy and seen the wide variation, this is definitely one of the better ones and I would definitely recommend it for a short stay as there may not be enough in the area to keep you entertained for a longer stay. ...
