As many of you know I was lucky enough to be given a holiday as part of my Christmas so I thought I would share with you where we stayed. We left on the 19th of January for one week half board in the three star hotel D'Or Tobago Palma Nova Majorca. The hotel is on nine floors and has 198 twin/ triple rooms catering for approximately 416 people when full. It is situated on a slight hill 50 metres from the beach and every room has a sea view there are no rooms to the back of the hotel. I believe the area we were in is actually Torre nova which is on the hill between Palma Nova and Magaluf. . The Reception On arrival we went into a very large and airy reception area which was painted yellow and had lots of green sofas, glass coffee tables and potted plants the mirrors on the walls and pillars made it seem even larger. There were statues of lions and kneeling oriental women which gave it quite an exotic feel. Check in was quick and efficient by uniformed staff. I wanted a safety deposit box for which I paid 21 euros paid in advance actual cost was 12 euros and I got 9 euros returned on departure. I was given the key card to room 506 plus an information leaflet about the hotel and also a card which we had to show at mealtimes to prove we had paid half board. The reception was manned 24 hours a day and all areas of the hotel were covered by CCTV there was also a mail box and two telephone boxes plus the usual stand of leaflets showing you things you can do in the area. There were two lifts to service the nine floors and they were not big each holding approximately 6 people.
The Room The room was a good size with twin beds and a large headboard incorporating two bedside tables with side lights and a picture of yachts at sea hung above it. The telephone was on the bedside table.. The wardrobe had sliding doors and had plenty of hangers on one side and shelves on the other plus the safety deposit box. There was a dressing table with two drawers and a chair pushed in under it and a large mirror over it. There was another chair in the corner and nearer the door was a luggage rack. The room had heating / air conditioning and a wall socket. We discovered the TV was suspended about 6 inches from the ceiling which again had to be paid for in advance it cost 16.80 euros per week and a 10 euro refundable deposit when the remote control was returned. A word of warning to anyone staying here with children do not let them flick through the channels on the television as one of the channels showed hard core porn all day, maybe that's why you had to watch it lying flat on you back!!!!! The decor was immaculate, it had white walls and ceiling while the bedspreads were a sea green colour which toned in with the curtains which were patterned green, yellow, blue, red and white. Sliding doors opened on to the balcony which had a table and one chair which seemed odd all the rest appeared to have two. However the view was stunning looking right along the beach and promenade of Palma Nova.
The Bathroom The bathroom was spotless with white bath ,toilet and wash hand basin. There was also a shower that was extremely powerful and lots of fluffy white towels and a bath mat that were changed daily. There was a shelf that carried spare toilet rolls, shower gel, soap and a couple of plastic disposable cups beneath that was a towel rail. A stool was in the corner beside the waste paper bin above which was a clothes hook. Just under the cistern was located the toilet cleaner and beside the sink was a razor point. The tiles on the floor were square and beige in colour and matched the wall ones which were the same though rectangle in shape. The shower curtain was white with the hotel logo on it. For an ensuite bathroom it was quite large in size and again immaculate.
On the wall outside the bathroom door was the instruction in case of fire and I was pleased to see there were two routes of escape and a fire extinguisher in the corridor outside the door. The room was cleaned daily between 7am and 3pm and in the entire week we never saw the maid but the room was always done as if by magic.
The Lounge Some refurbishment was going on during our stay ( the laying of a new laminate floor )so we did not use it but there were lots of sofas, chairs, card tables drinks and sweetie machines. There were also toilets and a luggage room that you could use if required on day of departure.
The Bar The bar was open from 9am to 12 mn and had doors that opened out to the pool. It was very large with lots of comfortable chairs and sofas also Darts and two pool tables plus a couple of machines for children to play on. Drinks were not too expensive 1 very large Smirnoff and a bottle of diet coke plus a regular coke was 5 euros. There was entertainment on every night usually music from a DJ varied from 60,70,80's to disco pub. It had a small dance floor with a glitter ball there was also a TV and a cigarette machine.
The Restaurant Meal times were breakfast 7.30 to 10.30 lunch 13.00 to 15.30. Dinner 19.00 to 21.30. Meals were all buffet for breakfast there was a large choice of items if you fancied a continental i.e. cereals, cakes, biscuits ,croissants ,ham, cheese, fruit, pate toast fruit juice tea or coffee. Or cooked included Fried eggs, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, bacon sausage, fried bread, tomatoes, beans, mushrooms to name just a few of the things on offer. You collected what you wanted using a tray and could sit at any table you wanted but then they insisted you ate with the plates still on the tray I presume to make it easier for them to clear it quickly away. Dinner at night was also buffet there was always a choice of 2 soups with brown/ white rolls or brown / white bread followed by the salad bar with the usual lettuce, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cucumber, rice salad, coleslaw, pickled onions, gherkins ,beetroot , various cheeses, ham, cold pizza, pie and grated carrots to name just a few of the delights on offer. The hot buffet consisted of at least 5 main dishes one at least was always chicken and one fish there was also always a pasta dish, vegetables and chips. Sweets, there were usually at least a choice of four items gateaux ,little choux buns, cream rolls, pastries and always four flavours of ice cream orange, lemon strawberry/ chocolate or vanilla plus fresh fruit. The restaurant was no smoking and high chairs were available. Just outside the door there were 4 computers but I think I would have been divorced if I had tried to go on one so I have no idea what the charge would be.
The Pool The pool was not too big but as the beach was just 50m away this was not a problem. There was a small children's pool. There were sun loungers tables and chairs and life belts. On the terrace there was a table tennis table.
My Impressions I felt the hotel offered great value for money our trip cost only £350 for a week half board. I have some reservations however if the hotel was full in high season two small lifts didn't seem adequate. Also if the restaurant was busy it would be chaos if children were running around, there were only two children during our stay and both managed to tip their plates and lose food all over the floor. There is also no soundproofing so if the hotel had been busier noise could have been a problem as it was we got used to the snoring from next door. Also as I said earlier the hard core porn on the TV would certainly be a problem if you had children. However I am nitpicking and rambling now ,we had a wonderful week of rest and relaxation and I cant wait to see what's in my stocking next Christmas.
