I went recently to this chain in Edinburgh and I wasn't happy with it at all. I think the only thing that has made me not give is just 1 star is the fact that the meat was actually very nice.
I was starving when we sat down at our table but it seemed to t ake forever to get served. Nobody knew what we were supposed to do- did we order at the bar? did we just go up to the carvery? Did someone come t our table? We had no idea at all. We tried to ask a waitress but she just rushed past us and after about ten minutes of us just sitting there looking blank we eventually managed t get served.
The alternative menu to the carvery was very poor- about 5 options 3 of which being salad!
We went up to the carvery and this caused problem number one- do we all go up together or does one person stay and 'guard' the table seeing as we had drinks and bags there. If we left one person behind then the queue was so long that we'd end up eating separately. Not very ideal at all.
The queue was long, we spent about 10 minutes queuing and then just as we got to the front the gammon ran out. luckily, i guess, that meant that we had fresh gammon which was lovely.
The meat was turker, gammon or beef and there were a selection of gravies too. The veg was all sat under hot lights so everything was very soggy and overcooked... you could tell just by looking.
The meal wasn't very enjoyable, the meat was very fresh and tasty but the veg and the potatoes were mushy and chewy and actually tasted WORSE than they looked which I wouldn't have thought possible!
I didn't particularly like the atmosphere either it seemed very bustly and noisy it was not at all an enjoyable, relaxing experience.
The staff were not very helpful or friendly. I felt a bit like we were in their way.
Money-wise the carvery was £5 which is cheaper than most main meals in a pub but this was just such lousy quality I wouldn't say it was worth it at all. The drinks were about £2.50 each which was where our bill soon became very large!
I don't really recommend this place at all unless you have very low standards or are desperate! It would be nice if they could improve the carvery experience instead of making it a very stressful one.
