Bring your own entertainment!!!
Advantages: Places to buy food & drink if needed Disadvantages: Untiday, All shops the same, uncomfortable seating... BORING!
I stayed at this aiport for about 6 and a half hours on my way to Australia last year... What a horrible place!
Travelling on my own, and having absolutely no knowledge of Japanese were definitely things against me. Getting from one end of the airport to another was horrible. All the signs are in Japanese, and the ones that do have English are very small and quite complicated. Once I figured out where I was going, I was looking forward to getting ... ...on some comfy seats. Not the case.
There are about 3 shops in the departure lounge I was in... all exactly the same. And one cafe, which had an interesting variety of nuts and other strange things... not what I was after!
There are a few comfortable seating areas... miles away from most of the departure gates. So if you want to wait by your gate, you have to suffer with hard seats. Lovely.
After finishing most of my book because there was nothing ...

Advantages: interesting Disadvantages: NA
The Tsukiji Fish market which is world famous. Every morning fishermen bring their catch in at about 4am and started the auction at 5. If you want to see the auction, you better start early!! About as traditional as you will get in Tokyo
Advantages: Traditional, lively Disadvantages: Crowded
If you can fight your way through the crowds A visit to the temple Sensoji is worth it. The area of Asakusa has many temples and is potentially a cheaper area to stay in than most parts of Tokyo as it has many Ryokan, which makes for a nice traditional place to stay in Japan, rather than a hotel. Walk your way down through the markets (take note of the signs warning you of pickpockets, it really is a very busy area) towards the temple. The markets ... ...the cheaper variety of course), food (try out the mitarashi dango, little round balls on a stick covered in sweet sauce) As you enter the temple wave the incense over your body, it is believed this will cure what ails you, if you aim it at the particular spot that has a problem. Most of the temple was destroyed in World War two bombings, though one of the entrances at the side survived and is quite old. (right hand side if you are facing the front ...
