Been traveling around the world, to me, Tokyo is like on another planet! Be careful if you are gonna arrive late or on the weekends. If it happens in another country, probably you would be safe as long as you find an ATM. But Tokyo is different! There are thousands of card symbols on the board by cash dispensers ( that’s how they call ATMs), but you would never find “Cirrus”, “Maestro” or “Plus”. Even with the credit cards there are problems, for example, they only take VISAs of certain banks. If it does occur to you, try City Bank near the big TV screen at the “Shinjuku” exit.

In Japan banks use security encryption system that is not compatible with the European credit/cash cards. Most CitiBank machines have the compatible ATMs, but there is no way of telling one from other non-compatible ones. Having Cirrus/Maestro logo really doesn't guarantee you can use your British-issued card. Take a number of cards, and exchange some cash while you're still in Britain!
