I stayed at this aiport for about 6 and a half hours on my way to Australia last year... What a horrible place!
Travelling on my own, and having absolutely no knowledge of Japanese were definitely things against me. Getting from one end of the airport to another was horrible. All the signs are in Japanese, and the ones that do have English are very small and quite complicated.
Once I figured out where I was going, I was looking forward to getting a drink, maybe something to eat and just generally relaxing on some comfy seats. Not the case.
There are about 3 shops in the departure lounge I was in... all exactly the same. And one cafe, which had an interesting variety of nuts and other strange things... not what I was after!
There are a few comfortable seating areas... miles away from most of the departure gates. So if you want to wait by your gate, you have to suffer with hard seats. Lovely.
After finishing most of my book because there was nothing else to do... and still having about 3 hours left, I decided to use the internet stations. I think it was about 500 Yen for 10 minutes. There was such a queue for this area, so I couldn't be long and only managed about 30 minutes of surfing! :(
Anyway, to summarise... not a bad airport really, but take some music, a book, some cards... anything to keep you entertained if you are there for a while! Six and a half hours can seem an eternity at this airport because once you've seen the contents of one shop, you've seen them all!

I've always found it to be fine, although I do speak Japanese, which helps as you mention. The shops and restaurants in the main area (before you enter the departure lounge) are very good. David

Good review. I'll take your advice and hope I don't ever have to go to this airport!
