Tombs of the Kings

Advantages: Interesting, fun
Disadvantages: No place for refreshments

...of my list is the Tombs of the Kings.

Tombs of the kings is a huge ancient cemetery in Paphos. Despite the name, the Tombs of the Kings was never used for royal burials. Instead, rich citizens were laid to rest in the site. Tombs of the Kings is named so because of the impressive appearance of the tombs. The area was used for burials during the Hellenistic and Roman times. After this, it was used as a refuge place for early Christians ...
...now. However, there are some tombs that are almost completely intact. These are really interesting to look around. There are many nooks and crannies to peek into, and if your really adventurous, crawl through. I wouldn't really advise the latter tough, as Cyprus is home to several species of snake (but only one is harmful).

When you are exploring the different tombs, you can get a real sense of the architecture of the time, as the ... more

Paphos tombs.

Advantages: Very entertaining and be a relaxing walk.
Disadvantages: No sale of drinks on site, so take plenty!

...are ever in Cyprus, The tombs of the the kings is a must see. You can enjoy hours of a relaxed walk viewing old tombstones and thinking back through history, in Paphos, in the Greek side of Cyprus As you walk into the area, there is a board telling you about what has happened throughout history, giving you a mental picture. You can then decide where to go next, but as the tombstones are numbered, it makes sense to start at number one. The tombstones ...
...in the walls where the tombs were originally made, but some of the stones look as if they have been 'renewed' and aren't original to the site. Most of the tombs have lost thier roofs as through the years there have been quite strong waves coming on to shore and also, winds have eroded the tombs slightly. Some of the tombs have holes that join to another and if you are daring you can come up from another tomb, but if you are in a dark hole, with no ...

On the beach, value for money hotel

Advantages: Location, service, food
Disadvantages: Few extra facilities

from the swimming pools, bars, library, a games room, souvenir shop etc. But the hotel is situated right on the beach and close to few bars and restaurants. That was enough for us as we wanted a relaxing holiday with something to do in the evening if we decided we didnt want to spend it in the hotel. There is a local bus route which stops outside the hotel which will take you into the old town of Paphos - there is a market there once a week. Or you could go sightseeing - the Castle at Paphos harbour, Tombs of the Kings and lots more. The whole of Paphos is actually on the World Heritage List so you can imagine there is plenty to see if you are into your history. Taxis are plentiful but I would order from reception and get them to quote you a price as some of the drivers tend to charge what they want. We actually hired a car from ...

Holidays go too quickly

Advantages: sunny, lots to see, reasonabley priced
Disadvantages: not many beaches

is quite black. The best bet beach wise is Coral Bay which is a short bus ride out of Paphos , it isn?t a huge beach but there is sand coloured sand. Generally speaking Cyprus enjoys a sunny climate for most of the year. In April the average temperature is about 23/24 OC (sorry don?t know how to do the proper o) rising throughout the year and then dropping to 23/24 in November. Paphos has a number of archaeological sites which are interesting to see. The Tomb of the Kings is just outside Paphos and is easily reached by bus. The entry charge is very reasonable. Despite it?s name no one royal was buried just prominent local sorts. The tombs date from about the 3rd century BC. They are a series of bizarre underground holes edged into the ground along with impressive underground pillars, You can be all Indianna Jones exploring ...
