Toronto (Canada)

... For both of them, it was their first visit to Canada (apart from a brief side trip to Niagara Falls that Gramma had made a few years ago) so it was exciting to be able to show them something of Canada, and especially Toronto. I got to thinking about what makes Toronto so special for kids. ... Read review

Toronto top 10 for kids

Advantages: A great city for kids
Disadvantages: Can be very hot or very cold

...to thinking about what makes Toronto so special for kids. Here, in no particular order, are my top ten tips. This review assumes that you have already traveled to Toronto and found a place to stay, so I won't go into those details.

THE CN TOWER

The CN Tower is obviously Toronto's most visible landmark. As the tallest free-standing structure in the world, it could hardly be otherwise.

Sadly, this was one ...
...is the one place in Toronto where you can't see it!

THE SKYDOME

The Skydome was a much bigger success with 13-year-old, and Gramma too. We treated them to their first ever baseball game, along with my brother, who lives in Toronto and is an ardent baseball fan. He sat next to Gramma to explain what was happening.

The Toronto Blue Jays have been a fixture in Toronto since they were founded in 1976. They ... more

Advantages: laid back people, things to see, interesting shopping, Niagara Falls, good exchange rate
Disadvantages: a lot of homeless people around, very weak coffee

...partner and I went to Toronto in July 2006. It was to be the first part of our holiday and then we were flying to visit my partner's brother in Albany, New York State. We booked our tickets through lastminute.com and got a really good deal- it was a three legged journey; Manchester to Toronto, Toronto to Albany and then Albany to Toronto ,and Toronto back to Manchester. For 2 tickets we paid £1600. I did a lot of research on the internet before booking ...

I think that having been once we would be confident enough to use these next time. There are buses and trains (the VIA system) -trains get into Union Station and you can go to other parts of the country and the USA from here. Toronto is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario and you can see this as you get the taxi from the ...

Toronto in Autumn

Advantages: Plenty to do
Disadvantages: none

...be described as breathtaking. Toronto is quoted as being “like New York but run by the Swiss”. Perhaps a bit unfair it is a beautiful city spotlessly clean and feels really safe to wander about at night. It is situated on the shores of Lake Ontario and is a sprawling metropolis of diverse cultures. Having so little time we wanted to cram as much as possible into our short stay.We found the Hop on Hop off bus a great way to see the city ...

It is absolutely huge and is the venue for all sorts of sporting events and concerts and is famous for its retractable roof. We did the tour round the stadium and this was much more to my sons liking. Ontario Science Centre This is a great place with lots of hands on displays, there is everything from planes to computers, drive ...

In search of haunted Toronto

Advantages: Lots of ghosts, good food, pretty money, a good variety of attractions
Disadvantages: Butter tarts and poutine are fattening

...to write about them. Toronto is Canada's largest city, with a thoroughly diverse population and over 200 years of history. Articles can be found on everything from the geological manipulation of its shorefront to early 20th century commercial architecture to ethnic gay cuisine. My interest is in its history and ghost folklore. This great city is rich in both of these areas. After spending almost a week in Toronto, I'd like to introduce other inquiring ...
...walked through the streets of Toronto until we stopped for the last story at Old City Hall, which was right next to Eaton Centre. For one story, Shirley used to take her punters into an old hospital, which is still used for that purpose. Because of the recent SARS scare, though, we stood on a corner across the street. The Elgin & Wintergarden Theatre had a fascinating story as it was a live theater built during the early 20th century. It became ...

Toronto in February

Advantages: Great city and sights, very friendly people
Disadvantages: Very cold, burritos

...all you don’t go to Toronto in February and expect to get a suntan, do you? Like a little boy on Christmas Eve, I was so excited. Seeing a new city, a new country I could hardly contain myself as a waited by the conveyor belt for my suitcase to come around. Waiting for suitcases always makes me a little nervous, my memory returns to a particularly embarrassing holiday to Majorca with my Mum and Dad. When everyone on the aircraft had disembarked ...

Anyway, back to Toronto and after a while I did start to worry about why had almost everyone else collected their cases and headed off downtown, while I and about a dozen other folks continued to wait patiently. I admit, for a while I was in denial refusing to believe my case was lost but I did eventually queue up and got the standard airline apology and the explanation that our cases were still at Glasgow. This occurred because on boarding ...

One of the worst airports in the world

Advantages: clean, good security
Disadvantages: long queues at immigration, customs, security and baggage claim, not much shopping or dining

If you are planning a trip to Toronto, you will encounter Toronto Pearson International Airport, also known as Lester B. Pearson International Airport or YYZ. The airport now consists of three terminals. Established in 1939, this airport is located approximately 20 miles from downtown Toronto and is ranked at number 28 amongst the world's busiest airports, handling nearly 30 million passengers in 2005. But is the airport really equipped to please all these travellers? ***Arrival and immigration *** Travelling with British Airways means that you will be arriving at and departing from Terminal 3, which was built in 1989 to offset traffic from Terminals 1 and 2. As you disembark from your airplane, you will be asked to have your passports ready for inspection, as immigration officers will meet you at the end of the gangway before ...

Why oh why did I try.

Advantages: Good food.
Disadvantages: No order in the gates, people weren't very helpful and my legs got tired.

I first stepped foot into the Toronto airport on my way to Edmonton. I was talking to a guy beside me, also heading to Edmonton, and he was telling me how terribly confusing it was to try and find your way around this airport. Well, let me tell you, I wasn't about to take his word for it. No, I thought I could figure it out no problem. First I stepped out from my gate and asked the nearest person where my gate was. He stared down at my ticket, stared up at me, then back down to my ticket. Now I think I had realized that he had no clue at all before he did because after a few half sentences and a couple scratches of the head. He handed me my ticket and walked off. It was about at this time that I thought I would start walking and hopefully make some sort of sense out of the gate order. Well, this was definitely my first mistake. I ...

Dig out the hiking boots!

Advantages: Quickly through Candian immigration & customs
Disadvantages: Far too much walking!

Recently I had the misfortune to fly into Pearson International Airport on a trip from Glasgow to Atlanta. Nothing wrong with the flight, or indeed with the view on the way in (Toronto looks like a beautiful city from the air, just on the edge of Lake Ontario). The airport itself is pretty grim, with lots of concrete in evidence. However I had been told about this, and even warned that there was lots of walking to do, but trust me you cannot prepare for the amount of walking ahead of you. However upon landing it seemed okay. Canadian immigration was very swift in processing us, and once we survived the bun-fight to get our bags customs was okay too. We then deposited the bags and started walking as the shuttle buses to terminal 2 were not in evidence. We walked and walked and walked. By the time we got through American ...
