I spent 10 days in Torquay with my wife and daughter in September. We stayed in a apartment about 10-15 minutes from the town centre called the "Clydesdale". The apartment itself was very good, everything you could possibly need was there.
We were less than 5 minutes walk to the beach (downhill) and then a futher 10 minutes walk along the seafront to town.
The beaches in Torquay are not the best, too much seaweed but very clean, deck chairs and loungers can be hired at a reasonable price, I think 80p for 3-4 hours. We found the beaches at Paington much nicer. There are lots of places to go, boat trips to Brixam, where there is a replica of the Golden Hind, a boat trip can be taken around the coast about 2-3 hours, and lots of coach trips.
Places of interest to visit include cockington village, Paignton zoo, Dartmouth and plenty of others in close proximity.
We ate out all the time and found some excellent restaurants, my personal favourite was an Indian called "maharajah" which is located on Victoria Parade, it's just a doorway at street level the restaurant is above the shops. There is a young lady working there called Shern'e who was very helpful and explained all the dishes to us and gave us very good service, I would highly reccomend it.
Another excellant place to eat was "Camalot" a meadery serving what you would expect from a restaurant with that name, massive meals of ribs, chicken, turkey legs, steaks and more. Another great place to eat is "Jingles" which is a Mexican ( if you want to eat there it is advisable to book even in September) i would reccomend the Chicken Creole.
Of course there are lots of takeaways , Macdonalds, Kentucky ect. a Brewers Fayre and of course not forgetting Wetherspoons with their cury and steak clubs. Places to drink are too numerous to count, lots of places for younger people including clubs and discos, we enjoyed sitting at the outside bars by the Marina and found 1 or 2 quieter pubs more to our liking.
If you like to shop you won't be dissapointed, the town centre is quite big mostly pedestria, although buses and service vehicles and the odd car do drive through. there are plenty of shops to keep you busy, although not many selling fudge ( my favourite ).
To sum up, if you get good weather you can't lose, good food and drink, plenty of entertainment especially for the younger generation and plenty of places to visit within 30 minutes drive. If We don't go abroad next year it will be hard choice between Torquay and Newquay where we went last year.
PS There are also free bus trips to areas around Torquay, I don't know if this is all year round or just late in the season. The buses leave from outside Debenhams facing the marina.
