Advantages: Hot, beautiful Disadvantages: long journey, not much to do
I would like to tell you about my holiday experiences on the island of LaGomera.
LaGomera is one of the lesser known Canary Islands. It's got lots of dramatic scenery, lots of fabulous walks and great all year round weather. It is nothing like any of the other Canary Islands. It doesn't have great beaches, but it does have a rain forest. The main way tourists reach it is by flying to Tenerife and getting a boat across. That's my first negative about the island. Tenerife is approximately 4 hours by plane from the UK, so if you get an early flight, you can be on the beach by mid afternoon, but not if you are going to LaGomera. You have to travel from the airport, we hired a car at the airport, to take over to LaGomera with us; travel to the harbour in Los Cristinos and wait for the ferry. We pre booked on the catamaran, which takes ...

Trekked around the TorresDel Paine National park as part of "Trek Patagonia" a charity trek organised by Mencap. I had always wanted to visit Chile and was able to combine raising over £3,000 for Mencap with seeing one of the most beautiful areas of Southern Chile.

We had local trek leaders with each group and all fitness levels were catered for. The trek to the 3 peaks was hampered by cloud, but the best part for me was a trek to the Grey Glacier. We sat and ate lunch facing the glacier watching chunks of ice thousands of years old dropping into the water- Magical.Glacial lakes and condors provided some of the views as we ...
Advantages: Quiet, scenic, fine weather Disadvantages: Cabin-fever
LaGomera is a smaller Canary island which can clearly be seen from the coast of Tenerife.
It can be reached by roll-on car ferry from Los Christianos, and the journey is similar to a Channel crossing in length, only the water's bit deeper, since both of the islands are effectively dormant/extinct volcanos rising from the Atlantic floor. Along with nearby Tenerife, it was the last re-victualling point for Columbus' many trips to the New World.
The island's shepherds and hill-farmers have developed a unique language of whistles for communicating with eachother on account of the rocky terrain and the depth of ravines, which make sharing the odd joke rather difficult.
By the time you read this, the island may well have an airport, which could alter the character of the place. It is thought to be a short runway affair intended ...
