For a special occasion we decided to book a few days away, the main criteria being that it had to have a spa and be not too far from home (Swansea). After the usual internet browsing and checking of review sites, we opted for Totworth Court as it matched all the criteria and we enjoyed our stay at Oxford Spires which is run by the same management group - The Four Pillars (Our stay at Oxford Spires has already been reviewed - http://travel.ciao.co.uk/Spires_Four_Pillars_Oxford__Review_5593865)
The hotel is located in Wotton-Under-Edge which is about 20 minutes North of Bristol off junction 14 of the M5. The hotel itself is a grade 2 listed Victorian building set in a few acres of its own land which is very pleasant to walk around and has 189 rooms all of which are on-suite.
We arrived at the hotel early - check in is not guaranteed until 3:30 - but parked in the ample car park which is laid out so
that your car is never far from you room and went to reception where we were able to get the normal check in forms completed and allocated out room minus the room key and told that we could make use of the hotel facilities including the gym and spa which we did …
The hotel has attached to it a lovely health club comprising a 12 metre pool including a small Jacuzzi, a small but fully equipped gym, sauna and steam room. The pool was a nice temperature and complemented by the Jacuzzi which was a few degrees warmer, and the sauna and steam room were also good. Once we has worn ourselves out we took the short drive into the small village of Wotton-under-edge to get some lunch which we brought back and ate in the sunshine on the benches outside the main building overlooking the gardens - very pleasant after which went to pick up our room key.
Again reception were very efficient at allocating our electronic door entry key and directed us to out room which was about 3 minutes walk away from reception. The room, which was a Deluxe double room, which was large to say the least. As you entered the room there was a desk, with lamp and telephone along with a 2 seater sofa an a TV. Then as you walked up the room there was the built in wardrobe (inside which was the iron, ironing board, trouser press and safe) then up to the sleeping area which was a queen-size double bed (not 2 single beds pushed together as in many rooms) a bed side unit with lamp each side and at the foot of the bed another TV, there was also a tall standing lamp in the corner. The décor was neat and clean but a little dark in places, a more neutral colour scheme would have enhanced the room even further - but that's probably just me looking for perfection !! The bathroom was a fair size and had the standard sink, toilet and bath with shower and was again clean and tiday with dark floor tiles and white wall tiles. The room was well taken care of with new towels added daily and everything well cleaned and tidied.
The first evening we drove into Cheltenham (about 25 minutes away) but had a drink in the bar on our return, the main bar, which is next to the reception area is quite large and has a mixture of large comfy sofa's and tables with standard bar chairs, offers the standard range of drinks and food at what are pretty much standard hotel prices.
Breakfast the next morning was very nice, the main dining room is in the huge room which is / used to be the library - the book shelves complete with books are still there. As normal toast and tea or coffee are brought to the table whilst everything else is on a self serve buffet basis, there was the standard hot English fair (bacon, sausage, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, beans, tomatoes, hash browns, potatoes & fried bread), the continental selection (croissants, bagels etc), a selection of cereals / mueslis, some fresh fruit salad and self service fruit juices. All were kept well topped up.
The second night we had food in the 'Orangery', now this is expensive, starters are between £7 and £9 with main meals between £13 & £18, however this price does not include any accompaniments, so potatoes, peas, carrots, chips, etc all have to be bought as extras at £2 each, these soon add up. The menu although nice is slightly limited for example there was no main chicken dish on offer when we went. The food is very good however and comes well presented and the staff are very helpful.
The checkout the next day was also well handled, the bill was correct and the polite staff wished us a safe trip home. The stay was very enjoyable and all in all good value, with 2 night in our twin room with breakfast being £186. All in all I would highly recommend it and would definitely stay there again.
