~ ~ No visit to London could be considered complete without a visit to this outstanding and totally fascinating piece of living history that could nearly be described as the very “soul” of England.
~ ~ It is said that the Tower dates from the time of William The Conqueror, and it celebrated its official 900th birthday back in 1978. But the reality is that there were already fortifications on this site for more than a thousand years before this, going right back to Roman times and beyond. The Tower is at the very heart of London’s history, with all the buildings from Norman times on very well preserved. When you look at it at night, when it is completely floodlit, it becomes a romantic and evocative vision that no film set designer could ever hope to emulate.
~ ~ One of the oldest remaining parts of the structure is the White Tower, right in the centre, that was built for the aforementioned William The Conqueror. Some alterations were made to the exterior of this tower by the great architect Wren, who was involved in the design and building of so many of London’s great buildings, (St. Pauls) but once you get inside the Norman origins are still very much in evidence.
~ ~ Probably the most infamous of the Towers is the Bloody Tower, because it was in here that most of the important prisoners from bygone days were confined and tortured. One particularly nasty little cell in this tower is somewhat inappropriately named Little Ease, as far from being comfortable, it was actually designed so that the unfortunate prisoner held within couldn’t sit, stand, or even lie down. It was in this Tower that a gruesome discovery was made a few years ago, when a well was uncovered in its lower section, filled nearly to the very top with human bones!! Some of its famous inmates must have found it slightly more comfortable however, as they spent so much of their lives behind its walls. The famous English sailor, Sir Walter Raleigh, actually spent thirteen years as a prisoner here. For seven of these years it was actually his “home”, as he was permitted to have his wife and family living with him, and his son Carew was actually born here. Much of the work on his famous “History of the World” was written behind its grim walls.
~ ~ The main tower is surrounded by fifteen others, each with their own name, and the whole complex rests across the ancient wall of the City of London. There was a fortress here in Roman times, which myth has it was built by none other than Julius Caesar himself, the famous Roman Emperor. Later in its history, it was also the site of a Saxon stronghold. Since the time it was built, the Tower has never come under serious attack, and throughout its long history has served more as a state prison than its original purpose as a fortress. Countless famous people from history were imprisoned here at one time or another, and many of those went on to lose their heads on the executioner’s chopping block.
~ ~ Things that shouldn’t be missed when visiting the Tower are the Gun Floor, St. John’s Chapel, (the oldest Church in England) the armouries, with a collection of weapons dating back to the time of Henry 8th, and the infamous old scaffold site located on Tower Green. If you’re lucky you’ll also spot the Tower’s famous tame ravens hopping around on the Green. There have always been ravens here since time immemorial, and the legend is that the Tower will crumble and fall should they ever decide to leave. As these days their wings are clipped to prevent them from flying, this is very unlikely to ever happen!!
~ ~ The Beauchamp Tower is the one that holds the record for the most distinguished list of past prisoners, such as Robert Dudley, a favourite of old Queen Elizabeth 1st, and Sir John Oldcastle. (possibly the person who Shakespeare based his famous character Falstaff on) There are nearly a hundred inscriptions carved on its walls by past prisoners. This list is by no means complete, and doesn’t come close to the true number of its victims, many of who were buried in the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula, or in the burial ground that lay close by. (now part of the Green)
~ ~ Many famous people lost their heads here at the Tower. Among the most noted were Sir Thomas More, the philosopher, statesman and later to become a Saint of the Catholic Church. Two wives of the great philanderer King Henry 8th lost their heads here, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, as did the famously hot-headed lover of Queen Elizabeth 1st, the Earl of Essex. The executioner’s axe was last used to chop off the head of a rebel in 1747, and is hardly likely to ever make a comeback in these times of opposition to Capital Punishment. The axe, execution block and various instruments of torture can still be viewed in the White Tower.
~ ~ Queen Elizabeth 1st, who made extensive use of the Tower to imprison her rivals and enemies, had a small taste of its dubious pleasures herself in her younger days before she became Queen. The then Queen Mary had her held prisoner here for a time in the Bell Tower. The story has it that she arrived at the Tower by barge at Traitor’s Gate, and although it was pouring with rain at the time, she sat herself down on the steps and resolutely refused to budge or to go any further. Looking at the grim and foreboding place, who could blame her!!!
~ ~ No visit would be complete with out feasting your eyes on the Crown Jewels. These are kept in a special building called the Jewel House, and you’ll be almost as impressed by the elaborate security measures employed to protect them from possible theft as by the jewels themselves. The only serious attempt to steal them was made during the reign of Charles 2nd, who was so short of cash that it is said he conspired with a fellow called Colonel Thomas Blood to have them stolen and broken down. Blood actually got as far as the Traitor’s Gate before he was stopped and apprehended, and, off course, the King denied all knowledge of his alleged participation in the crime. What is strange is that Blood was never tried for his crime, and in fact enjoyed a Royal "pension" for the rest of his life! The jewels that you will see today are actually mostly from the period after Charles 2nd, as the originals were taken and scattered far and wide during the time of the Commonwealth in Britain, when Oliver Cromwell was lord over all.
~ ~ Another exhibit worth a visit is the Herald’s Museum, which is run by the College of Arms Trust in the Waterloo Building. Although the exhibits here are changed on an annual basis, they will always include various items of heraldry, such as documents, ancient shields and Coats of Arms, and coronets and crests. It is also worth taking the walk along the battlements that gives a whole new dimension to viewing the Tower as a whole.
~ ~ Nearby the Tower itself is Tower Bridge, which is frequently mistaken for London Bridge. This bridge is relatively new in London historical terms, having only opened to traffic as recently as 1894!! It is now used as a rather unusual museum, with walkways which are open to the public, and where a wonderful view out over the City can be had from the top.
~ ~ The Tower is peaceful enough in these modern times, and it is very pleasant indeed to sit in the gardens near its ancient cannons and simply watch the River Thames as it winds its way to the sea. But remember that it is still a functioning military fortress, and you’ll often see troops around from most of the crack Army regiments, as well as the old watchmen, the Yoeman Warders, more popularly called the Beefeaters, who patrol the grounds in their colourful and picturesque Tudor-style uniforms.
~ ~ This is by no means a cheap attraction to visit, but it is nevertheless worth every penny of the admission price. Adults are £11.30, students and senior citizens £8.50, children between 5 and 15 are £7.50, with children under five free of charge. A good buy is the Family ticket at £34, which covers two adults and up to three kids. Tickets may be purchased at the Tower itself, or at any London Underground station. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to visit this attraction, as there is much to see. If you haven’t yet visited this piece of living history, then do yourself a big favour and do so the very next time you find yourself free in London for a day.
Advantages: Lots to see, entertaining staff Disadvantages: Busy
...that we would try the Tower Of London this time as I haven't been there for years and boyfriend never had visited. To get to the Tower Of London is fairly easy. We travelled on the tube, which is on the circle and district lines. It would also be easy to get to by bus. I would not recommend ... ...certainly have a problem trying to park. The ticket offices are fairly obvious once you get there. There were only reasonably small queues which was good considering it was very busy overall. The ticket prices are reasonable for a London attraction. It was 17 pounds for an adult and about ten pounds for a child. They also had concessions for students and over 60's. If you are a tax payer you also can give gift aid and if you do that they give you ...

...in the world – the Tower of London. For nearly a thousand years, this great fortress, palace and prison played a central role in England’s turbulent history. Through its gates passed kings, queen, courtiers, churchmen, politicians and judges-some to emerge in triumph, others never to be seen alive again. Why was the Tower built and what human dramas inside its walls shaped the course of English history.

follows is of any interest unless the hotel is in the right place. The Tower Bridge Travelinn is located on Tower Bridge Road - within walking distance of Tower Bridge, The Tower of London, the London Dungeon, Southwark Cathedral (or if you visit is perhaps for less pleasant reasons: Guys Hospital).
Less than ten minutes walk from London Bridge station (main line & tube). Though it must be admitted that it is not the most pleasant walk the first time you do it, in the dark, in the rain, along the arches?it is actually well-lit and quite busy in terms of pedestrian traffic. In daylight it's quite interesting in an urban-history kind of way.
The immediate environs of the hotel are mainly office and residential. There is a local supermarket just over the road, and a couple of coffee-shops and pubs within strolling distance.

Now as a rule I never stay south of the river when I visit London, however due to a Hilton 50% off promotion I made an exception so booked a stay at Hilton Tower Bridge. I booked my stay through the Hilton website and secured an Executive room with access to the Executive lounge that also included breakfast.
Arrival
The hotel does not have the benefit of an on-site parking, however it recommends the Q Park, which was apparently close by. The sat nav got me there easily, however it soon became apparent that the car park was actually quite a walk from the hotel. It took about fifteen minutes to walk and with your luggage in tow this was no mean feat! The only saving grace was that the parking was £10 per night compared to around £30-40 in west London. After our walk we eventually arrived at the hotel.

Arriving in Pepys street London EC3, the first thing that was noticeable was the position of the hotel. It sat quietly in a back street, just around the corner from the tower of London.
Walk into the hotel and you are hit by the brightness and cleanliness of the hotel lobby. The whole place shines and sparkles, and with a cleaner wiping the windows and tidying up any mess left behind guest?s, that?s the way it will surely remain?
We arrived at the hotel at about 11.30am and were shocked when we were told we could book in (usual time is mid day). We had rooms next door to each other, on the first floor.
