Much of England's history is covered in the Tower of London, and is definitely worth a visit. The Tower orignally started by William the Conqueror, although he didn't live to see it finished, has been added to by various Kings over the years and bits taken away. Recommended is the trip to see the Crown Jewels (get there early!!) and the Medieval Palace to see lots of information about Edward I. You must see the Tower 2000 exhibition to see 14 portraits of the Tower over the centuries from pre-Roman times to the present day. Also you can see the cell where Thomas More was imprisoned, and hear about other celebrities such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Rudolph Hess, plus the scaffold where Ann Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey all met their ends. There's much to see and browse throughout the day. Go on one of the beefeater tours. The main drawback is the expense. £11!!!!! And £3.50 for the programme. Even 80p for a can of coke.
