The Tower is chiefly famous for two reasons ~ it has a long history and it is the repository of the British Crown Jewels.In fact only seven famous heads have been parted from their bodies in the castle confines.
Although over 400 people were executed in the public arena of Tower Hill just outside the Tower.Henry VIII`s second and fifth wives, Anne Boleyn and Caatherine Howard were executed inside the Tower,while Sir Thomas More and Sir Walter Ralegh were imprisoned in the Tower.
Prisoners were brought in and out of the Tower by boat through the Traitor`s Gate,still visible from the Embankment.The Tower of
London is the most haunted building in London ~ famous sightings of the ghosts of Anne Boleyn and Sir Walter Ralegh.
The Tower was not just a palace of execution it also served as a royal palace.William the Conquerer began its construction in 1078,building the central keep,known as thw White Tower.The White Tower has recently been restored and includes a beautiful 12th century Chapel of St John.
Most of the world famous Crown Jewels are kept in the Jewel House,jewels dating back to 1660.Queen Victoria`s Imperial State Crown has many famous jewels but none so well known as the Koh-i-Noor(Mountain of Light)diamond on the Queen`s Mother crown.
There are many other attractions within the Tower including the Fusiliers Museum ~ the medieval Palace and the Wall Walk
