Types of railway stock that XC Trains Ltd, CrossCountry use.
Advantages: Pleasent Staff, always there to help! Disadvantages: No leg room, very dated, uncomfortable seating, and not enough space to put your luggage.
When the company Arriva took over the franchise which Virgin Trains previously held before the 11th November 2007 the Voyagers were still as bad as they are today. But since then I believe that they have done very little to modernise their second had rolling stock and as a result their journeys are uncomfortable, noisy and generally unpleasant, with very little space to put your bags and other things. There are some exceptions to this however, as ... ...stock, not their 'fantastic' HSTs (High Speed Trains)! Although I hasten to add that their staff are very polite and do their jobs efficiently. But what ever comparison they will never be better than First Great Western's newly refurbished HSTs, where they have thought about the comfortability of the passenger. However there is very little choice in the matter if you need to get a train from Bristol to Exeter for example! ...

Not Quite an Express
Advantages: Can be an inexpensive way to see the country, frequent service, free wifi on board Disadvantages: Overcrowding, old trains, journey times slower than 25 years ago
...the franchise passed on to National Express in 2007 after GNER’s parent company filed for bankruptcy protection. It was felt that National Express had paid way over the odds for the franchise and sure enough as the recession began to bite, they found themselves in a perilous financial predicament, and upon failing to renegotiate the terms of the franchise with the government, it was announced in June 2009 that the government would be taking the franchise ... ...Where Can I Go? National Express East Coast (NXEC) has it’s main route between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross. Branching off the mainline is the service to Bradford, Wakefield and Leeds, but travelling north from Kings Cross the line traverses Peterborough, Grantham, Newark, Doncaster, York, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh, with several other minor stops. Several of the services into Edinburgh continue ...

Flying to the Airport!
Advantages: Unique, Reliable & Fast. Disadvantages: Over in too quick a time.
...train. Shanghai
While in Shanghai and not wanting to go on a shopping trip we decided instead to take the Maglev train from the Longyang road station out to Shanghai’s Pudong international airport which was far more interesting for me than going on yet another shopping trip.
What is so special about the Shanghai Maglev train?
The train travels on a monorail type structure about fifty feet above the ground. Yet it is not a monorail it is a train ... ...station is situated in downtown Shanghai above the underground station on line two of Shanghai’s metro system. The station has an exhibition area on the ground floor showing how the construction took place and different speeds of various forms of transport as a comparison and how the maglev train works. The station is new and modern and very clean. You can buy your tickets from a kiosk despite not understanding Chinese it was easy to buy the tickets ...

Like television but much much better
Advantages: Good value for money, extensive network Disadvantages: Some timetabling oddities
...short the problem is this, Slovenian trains are timetabled to be of benefit to people who want to leave early and spend all day wherever they are going; it is not easy to go for a day trip on a train in Slovenia unless you want to get up very early and stay until late in the day. Often when we go somewhere by train in Slovenia I am ready to come home by three because I am worn out. Another flaw is the apparent inability of Slovenske zeleznice to ... ...would have thought that the Slovenian Tourist Board and Slovenske zeleznice should be getting together and doing something useful in this situation. Do they want tourists to spend their money in Austria or Slovenia? The sooner they get you into Slovenia the sooner they can have your money. It is even more perplexing that they can't organise this when you know that Slovenske zeleznice have all kinds of initiatives to get you to the countries best ...

First Transpenine Express is the mainly local train company for the North covering the area including Middlesborough, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, York and Durham. They have however recently started covering Scotland, mainly Edinburgh and Glasgow.
I have used First Transpenine Express regularly for a large number of years, this has mainly been sort journeys, primarily from Huddersfield to Leeds/York/Manchester. The trains are on time and reasonably ... ...always been correct too.
First Transpenine Express have an excellent deal for those with a Young Persons (16-25) railcard where you can pre-purchase tickets up to 6pm the day before travel and you get a VERY good discount, typically half the normal student fare. You do have to travel off peak and on the trains that you book but you do get a reserved seat and save a decent amount of money. I have used this many times, often booking just the day before ...
