Room
This particular room was a decent size and had a double bed and sofa with pullout single, crisp white sheets and ... ...what you'd expect from a budget chain. We opted for a no-smoking room as smoking is permitted in the bar downstairs if required.
The en-suite was clean and had bath, shower (very powerful), heated towel rail and no shortage of towels. Large over basin mirror, plastic glasses and single 'freebie' soap - just as expected.
Kettle was provided for tea/coffee with 2 mugs and a few tea/coffee satchets stuffed into the mugs! ... more

This particular room was a decent size and had a double bed and sofa with pullout single, crisp white sheets and duvets a plenty. The room was clean and basic just what you'd expect from a budget chain. We opted for a no-smoking room as smoking is permitted in the bar downstairs if required.

20 inch TV on the dressing table with usual terestrial stations plus one or two basic digital stations and radio options.
Telephone. No hairdryer.
Hotel Facilities
Two lifts (one out of order), one at each end of the buiding and a disabled lift to get up the first few steps into the hotel. A bar is located behind the reception desk and is open until 2am. This area also serves as the breakfast area in the morning so be warned it does smell of stale smoke - not he most pleasant aroma when dining!
Staff/Security
A swipe card system is in operation for door security of course these ceased working after one or two days and had to be re-programmed. Security guards are employed, and, in the evening are very vigilant about who gets in they check off each guest as they arrive back in the evening. On the whole the staff were very friendly and patient with the rowdy crowd who were staying this particular weekend. Even obliging with a cup of tea in the bar area late in the evening for my non-alcohol drinking friend.
Suitability
I've no idea what this hotel is like midweek but on the weekend it was full of large groups. There was quite a bit of noise and people obviously arriving back at the hotel very late. Everyone was having a very good time! There was a couple of families there but I wouldn't recommend it, the language of some guests in and around really wasn't suitable for young children. Don't plan to stay in this hotel if you're looking for a quiet weekend but then again who goes to Newcastle for a quiet weekend?

Thanks to a recent visit to Alton Towers we decided to stay at Stoke Talke
TravelLodge - Stoke Talke - Newcastle Road - ST7 1UP
Booking the hotel
Like all TravelLodge rooms all you need to do is surf along to their website, I booked the room about 6 weeks before our arrival date so I was fortunate enough to get the room at the discounted price of £29 per room. Once I booked them room online I received confirmation in the form of an email from TL. I booked 2 family room which will sleep 3 adults on a non smoking basis.
Please bear in mind that the prices will be cheaper if you book in advance, certain prices are non refundable.
Getting to Stoke Talk TravelLodge
We travelled from Edinburgh by car to Stoke Talke - It taken us 5hrs and that included stopping at services for a wee brew. From Edinburgh we ...

aimed at business travellers and couples, and most can accommodate children within the room. So far I have found the Premier Lodges less booked up than the other chains and, on average, in slightly more pleasant locations.
Like most Travel Inns, all the Premier Lodges have an adjacent pub/restaurant. However, the Premier Lodges seem slightly cheaper and (to my pleasure) allow payment on arrival or departure - if paying on departure you can charge food and drink to the room, which is civilised and convenient.
I believe that Premier Lodge is operated by Scottish & Newcastle, aiming squarely to compete with Whitbread's Travel Inns. Hence the adjacent pub/restaurant is one of the pub company's house style brands, which I have found generally comfortable and relaxing although rather synthetic and lacking any individuality. At least ...
Advantages: Wherever you go in the country you should expect the same standard of accomodation and facilities. Disadvantages: The quality of these can vary wildly!
Once upon a time, these hotels were Premier Lodges and Travel Inns. Premier Lodges used to be owned by Scottish&Newcastle (brewers by trade) and Travel Inns by Whitbread (previously a brewer by trade, now more of a leisure provider).
Premier Lodge and Travel Inn used to be the hottest competitors for the top spot in budget hotel chains, and Premier Lodge previously always won.
Since Scottish&Newcastle has ceased to exist, all of its bars and pubs have been successfull in remaining pretty much whatever they were before, with the sale of each having little effect, while Premier Lodge, as the Company's only venture into the accomodation side of hospitality, was thrown into the lurch, which had a major effect on staffing, support system reliability (such as Head Office/food suppliers/staff payroll) producing a negative effect ...
