So you have decided to go on a trip, well thats great and I hope you will thorougly enjoy that trip but which suitcase should I take with me. There are huge varieties of cases on the market and most importantly you should think about the weight of the case.
The standard travelling delsey weighs 5.2 kg which at time of purchase how many of you ask how heavy the luggage is? Most recommemded by myself would be delsey strong durable and will travel well, a Delsey should last you 15 years of heavy travel, I travel constantly working for an airline, and have tried out variuos brands I would secondly reccomend Samsonite hard shell cases, but again the disadvantage is that they normally weigh 7kg, so if you are travelling economy class then that will leave you with only 16kg of luggage allowance with 23 kg being the standard allowance, so weigh up what suits you.
In airpoorts today the majority of luggage is not man handled in any form with eletronically barcoded computer conveyor systems which will direct the luggage to the nearest offload site, with this in mind handling of baggage is far better than before.
Use a hardshell case if you are carrying glass bottles or items that may be crushed and damaged, including electical goods that may get bumped around. U a soft shell case if you dont have anything that could get damaged, most bottles can be carried on board and airlines normally do not have any objection to items like this being carried on board.
The average soft shell case made by Antler etc weighs about 2.3 kg a big difference. Always bear in mind that airline charge you 1% of the first class airfare for excess baggage. for your info
Excess baggage rates European charter flights £3.00 per kilo Los Angeles and USA works per piece so £36-£56.00 per piece Johannesburg £9.70 per kilo Australia £21.00 per kilo
Bear in mind if travelling to the states you do not have to worry about weight normally as they allow two pieces per person so in this instance use a hard shell case, but for all other use the lovely soft cases. One thing to be bear in mind if your lucky enough to be planning a round the world trip, make sure you travel west to east , that way you will maintain the USA piece system throughout the entire journey, as if you go east first you will only be allowed the usual 23kg standard economy baggage allowance
That was really helpful, I'm just thinking about buying my first set of luggage (just borrowed my parents before) and I was really confused about if there were size or weight limits. So thanks for clearing up the issues for me! xxx

Thanks - lots of useful information here. Just got back from Ibiza tonight with 10 bottles of booze in our luggage -but we had no worries with weight, fortunately!
