The Travelodge in Brentwood is actually situated about 5 miles outside of Brentwood in east Horndon. It is located just off the A127 next to a Little Chef and a privately owned pub. It in only a small hotel and there are two different types of room available to book – double rooms or family rooms.

We were going to Brentwood for a long weekend and wanted somewhere cheap to stay for four nights. This was the cheapest option and it wasn’t until we got there did we realise why. All the other hotels available on the search were closer to town and therefore more expensive. However, the booking was made online and payment was taken straight away.

Our room cost about £69 each night and prices quoted are per room per night so there is no cheaper rate if only 1 person books a room. There are, however several deals on at the moment where is you book in advance you can secure a lower rate. The cancellation policy on the room is quite reasonable as well because you have until 12pm on the day of arrival.

It was quite hard to find the fits time we went as the map shows it on the east bound carriage way of the A127. As we were going west we had to go a few junctions down the A127 and turn round and come back again. The next day though we found there was a small road leading out the back of the car park which took us straight onto the main road to Brentwood and avoiding the A127 completely.

There was no need to check in as details had been completed online and payment had been taken so all we needed was to collect our key. The room was very basic and I can see why it was so cheap. We had booked a family room so there was a king size bed and a separate sofa bed in the room. Not that we needed it, but there would have been plenty of room for a child in the room.

The bathroom however was a different story. The bath was very small and when I sat in it the water only covered my legs. Definitely not one to relax in. The shower was also very basic and not very powerful but I suppose it did the job. The floor was quite rough and quite hard on the feet and there was no bath mat so it also got very wet.

On closer inspection of the room we also found that there were lots of bugs flying around. There were lots of trees outside the window and guessed that the housekeeper left the window open while cleaning as that is how we found it one afternoon when we returned. This was quite off putting and we spent quite a lot of time chasing after them to try and get them out.

There was also a rather dodgy looking brown stain going up the wall by the bed and also one on the ceiling as well. I wouldn’t like to guess how that had got there. Also, the number of towels we had diminished throughout the stay. On the first night we had 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels. The next night we had 1 bath towel and 3 hand towels and on the last night we only had one of each.

We weren’t looking for luxury, we only wanted somewhere to sleep for the weekend and this provided it. The bed was very comfortable and I slept really well. But surely it’s not too much to ask that there are no bugs in the room? I think the room could have done with a touch of paint as well, especially to cover up the stains on the wall, which really weren’t nice. It doesn’t cost much to keep the place looking fresh.

Although the stay was comfortable I don’t think I would return. I have stayed in Travelodge’s before but they were clean and bug free!
