In pursuing my quest to discover my family roots, I visit a lot of places to discover places and information that feature in my family's history. My husband's grand father was the head grounds man in Haydock race course in the early 1900s so we headed off to Haydock to take a look around and talk to some of staff with hopefully useful information. The cost of travel and hotels can get very costly so we try to keep the cost as low as we can.
Travelodge run a chain of budget hotels - perfect for our needs. They don't boast any luxuries or fancy extras, just a comfortable bed and friendly welcome. As we are out during the day researching, this suited us just fine.
Like many of the hotels in the Travelodge chain, Haydock St Helens offer a range of prices including the super -saver rate of £15 per room per night, the saver rate of £26 per room per night and the flexible rate of £49 pounds per night. We were lucky to get two nights
at the super-saver rate however to get this rate you do need to book at least one month in advance. Payment is required at the time of booking and is non-refundable.
Haydock St Helens is easy to find, just off the A580 (one mile from junction 23 on the M6). There is ample free parking at the hotel. Entrance to the hotel is fully accessible to all with a level-access entrance through double doors leading to the reception area.
Reception is manned 24 hours a day. Check-in is from 3 p.m. and a very simple procedure. The receptionist enters your details on the computer - prints out a record for you to keep -hands you your key and directs you to your room. (No porters to carry your bags). We were on the ground floor but there was an upper floor accessible by a flight of stairs or lift. During our two nights at the hotel, all the reception staff were very friendly and helpful. In the reception area was a well-stocked vending machine displaying a wide-variety of goods from toothpaste, razors and shampoo to crisps and chocolate bars.
Our room was standard. Go anywhere and stay in a Travelodge hotel and you will find the same layout of room - and we can fully attest to that. As we entered the room, the en-suite bathroom was to the right with bath, wash-basin and toilet. To the left is a small shelving unit with an area for hanging clothes. Into the room is the king sized bed covered simply with a bottom sheet and duvet. At the far end of the room was a sofa which opens out to provide an extra bed if required - we didn't. Also in the room was a remote control colour TV, tea and coffee-making facilities and a phone.
The en-suite bathroom was functional but very basic. The bath was smallish but had good water pressure - not a bath for lounging in but adequate for its intended purpose. No toiletries are provided but hey we take our own any way.
We were supplied with two towels only. Travelodge claim that this is to eliminate unnecessary cost whilst being more environmentally friendly. They also say that two toels generally meet client need. I have to say, that we do use more than one towel each! You can ask for more at reception. However, this was not really a problem as I always pack towels.
To complete the utilitarian effect, when the bathroom light is switched on, the extractor fan is activated. This was however very nosy and as there was no way of by-passing this, we tended to bathe in just the light available from the main room.
The bed was reasonably comfortable, the duvet was warm and cosy as advertised and we did have a good night's sleep. The noise from the nearby A580 was noticeable but not overly disturbing.
There is no fridge, no minibar - just a small kettle and a meagre offering of tea bags, coffee and milk. Only enough for one or two cups each!! We did ask the receptionist for more and were generously supplied with a bag of goodies.
There is no restaurant or café in the hotel. Travelodge do offer an opportunity to buy a breakfast bag (orange juice, cornflakes, a croissant, jam and a banana) at a cost of £4.50 which is delivered to your room at a time of your choosing. Alternately, you can go to the adjacent Little Chef where a range of breakfasts and main meals are on offer. Also close by, is a Brewer's Fare offering a good choice of meals.
There is no gym, no sauna, no cinema, no bar - no entertainment on site. (You can pay for in-house movies £6 a day with about 7 different film options). So apart from the television, if you want entertainment - you do need to travel for it.
No frills! Haydock St Helens is a basic budget hotel but that is what we expected - Travelodge do not claim it to be anything else. It was though, clean warm and comfortable and the staff very friendly and efficient. It suited our needs. If all you want is a clean, comfortable place to lay your head without too much expense, then Haydock St Helens Travelodge will meet your requirements.

My brother "lives" in Haydock most weeks Mon-Thurs but usually stays at the Holiday Inn (Alan Partridge-like, he has his own room!) This is handy to know though - always good to have a plan B!
