Advantages: Good value, great location Disadvantages: Very basic room, expensive bar and restaurant
...thing you see of the Travelodge is the large car park, which if you do have a car you can use at a discounted rate as a patron of the hotel. You then go up one last hill to get to the doors.
_Interior_
When entering the hotel you are greeted with a large reception desk and immediately to the left is the bar and eatery. Going through a double door and there is the staircase and lift shaft. As we were only on the first floor we ... ...decided not to, having experienced Travelodge breakfasts before! The cleaning staff wee friendly and the room was tidy, both when we first got there and then also when we got back in on the second day. When we asked at the desk about getting around the city, they were always very friendly and helpful. The bar seemed busy at night (as we were heading out to other bars!) but was quite expensive, as was the food you could buy from there.

The City
Newcastle is a vibrant city, which has recently undergone much modernisation and often finishes near the top of polls which record things such as nightlife and atmosphere. Many of the buildings around the town centre date from the 1830s and are still generally in good condition. Despite being a large city, you never feel like you are too far from anywhere - it is a very compact city centre. It is well known that Newcastle is a football-mad city, and the large St. James' Park overlooks the city, and is the dominant landmark. The city itself is on many levels and walking around therefore is a tiring experience. However, as nowhere is too far away you are never walking for too long. There are many pubs and clubs, and even if you don't know exactly where you are going you can stumble upon a watering hole without too much trouble.
The Hotel
Price We booked a double room, three or four months in advance and got it for £20 per night.
Location It is on the thriving Quayside area, in the shadow of the famous Millennium Bridge. It is about a ten minute (up and down) walk to the train station, 15 minute (mainly up) walk to the main shopping centres at Grey's Monument and Eldon Garden and a five minute (thankfully flat) walk to the main nightlife area.
Exterior From the train station the first thing you see of the Travelodge is the large car park, which if you do have a car you can use at a discounted rate as a patron of the hotel. You then go up one last hill to get to the doors.
Interior When entering the hotel you are greeted with a large reception desk and immediately to the left is the bar and eatery. Going through a double door and there is the staircase and lift shaft. As we were only on the first floor we used the stairs!
The Room The room we had was very large, yet sparsely furnished. There was a large double bed with a small table on either side, a long desk which housed the kettle and television and a built in wardrobe. There was also a bathroom, which was incredibly small and had only a toilet, sink and very small shower. The bathroom was a let down as the rest of the room was much too big for purpose and it could easily have been extended. The shower was so small that you could not get away from curtain and it would continually stick to you. The television was well equipped with BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Film4 and CBeebies. The kettle was old and needed washing before it could be used. We were only provided with two pillows so got two more from reception. We also were only provided with two towels. The heater seemed to have a mind of its own and there was no way we could control it! The window could only open a couple of inches, but as we were there in early January this was not a problem.
Additional Services
We could have had breakfast from the hotel in the morning, but at a cost of £7.50 we decided not to, having experienced Travelodge breakfasts before!
Final Thoughts
There were signs up around the Travelodge stating that the reason the rooms were so cheap that they didn't give us 'extras' that we didn't want. The list they gave were things such as shower caps, shampoos and satellite channels. On the whole, I like this approach as you tend to take your own shower stuff, and we weren't left wanting for anything during our stay. I would certainly recommend Newcastle Central, as it is in a great location and is very good value.
