My sister started Southampton University last weekend; the drive down from Liverpool to Southampton takes around 5-6 hours, so we needed a place to stay for the night close to Southampton. We ended up staying in two Travelodges and I intend to review them both, ultimately to show the huge contrast between the two.

The first one we stayed in was in Eastleigh; about 5 minutes drive from Southampton. We booked online for a price of £26 per room per night which we thought was very reasonable - for £26, you wouldn't anticipate more than just a bed! We knew exactly where we were going as Travelodge had e-mailed us directions to the Travelodge from the motorway as well as directions to the centre of Southampton.

The site looks like it was an old farm. One of the buildings had been converted into a nice local pub and restaurant, and another built into a Travelodge. The actual Travelodge itself is tucked away behind the pub but has its own car park and is separated from the restaurant by trees so that it is not so obtrusive.

We got two adjacent rooms on the upper floor, and only after having settled in did we realize these were actually overlooking an extension that was being built consequently the view wasn't exactly dazzling, but there certainly wasn't any noise problem! The rooms are equipped with what you would expect: a television, bedding (and extra bedding for the sofa-bed), tea and coffee making facilities (even though the tea and coffee seemed to be in short supply), towels and a block of soap. Although we weren't expecting it, there weren't any of those little bottles of shampoo, shower gel, conditioner and the like - well, let's face it, they're only taken home and kept in a cupboard for years anyway!

The whole room itself was very clean. Even though we only ever saw one person actually working there, they obviously had high standards. The bedding was nice and soft and the beds were comfortable - even the sofa-bed was more than suitable for sleeping on!

For our dinner that night, we thought we'd give the restaurant a go. It's split up into two buildings, one being the pub / bar, the other being the restaurant itself. Due to the colossal amount of people eating there (I assume because it was the only pub within a couple of miles and no doubt most of Travelodge residents eat there too) we had to wait in the bar for fifteen minutes until a table was free, but it was worth it. The food portions are huge and are great value for money. I got half a chicken in BBQ sauce with salad and chips for just under £8. Considering the amount of people there, the food was exemplary!

Overall, as far as Travelodges go, this is one of the best! It's in a perfect location, the rooms are more than acceptable and we had a great nights sleep. Will definitely be staying there when we have to go down yet again next summer!
