My better half was to be 60 on the 19th June.
What would you like for your birthday I asked, she replied to Spend the Day on Porthmeor Beach in St Ives.So checked Hotels on Hotelscomparison.com.
Best deal at the time seemed to be St Eia Hotel at £95 per night for Double with breakfast. We would be going Sunday night for 3 nights, as Sat was a family celebration with children and grandchildren.
On the Weds before, trawled for Hotels again and up came Tregenna castle at £85 per night, as the other booking eas thru Booking.com which had a free cancellation, quickly did a switch. We arrived Sunday 17:00 at the railway station, took steps to main road and just across was a footpath gate to Trgenna castle, really we should have taken a taxi.
Although we only had small cases on wheels, the footpath is quite a steep climb to the hotel.
It looked very grand, and we entered the main door, along to the reception, which was very efficient. Lots of info given about Hotel, verbally and leaflets.
With these cheap deals we expected a room at the top around the back. How wrong, we were on the ground Floor in the West Wing at the front.
Really impressed on entering room to see a Four Poster bed, large room with large bathroom off the side. The grounds are 72 acres, which includes a 18 hole golf course, (not a player myself).
There was a Sub tropical walled garden which we enjoyed each morning before going for breakfast. They gave us a leaflet showing a nature walk around the grounds, many rabbits, they say they also have badgers. Lots of bird life. Robins in profusion.
A croquet lawn, indoor and out door swimming pool. Spa and all the things you expect from a good hotel. They also have self catering cottages in the grounds (visit their own site www.tregenna-castle.co.uk)
Also some large 4 bedroom chalets that are leased for a week for 25 years (Time share principle)
Breakfast was in a large room (suspect Ball Room) very attentive staff, had you seated and took orders for Tea or Coffee.
The rest was buffet style.
Hot selection very high quality Bacon, Sausages, free Range Eggs fried and scrambled, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, beans,
There was a wedding in progress when we arrived on the Sunday and another on the Monday. A truely great Location for the event. The weather really looked after us, we had 3 Sunny Days the best being on the Tuesday Janes Birthday which we spent on the Beach from 10:00 until 18:00.
So Jane got her wish and a couple of swims. And we left on the Weds Morning feeling we had at last became the People who stayed on the Hill.
