Only after leaving Treviso to settle in England, did I start deepening my understanding of the history, culture and people of the area.

I re-visited my home town with open eyes. A quite important market town, its wealth was built on the water that flows even today through a network of waterways and canals, which have filled to become un-navigable with the construction of the electrical generator works near Largo Altinia and the coach and railway stations.

Since leaving it I have grown to appreciate what a truly useful location it commands. So near to both the sea and the Venitian lagoon to the south and the Alps to its north and east, it is a perfect base to explore north eastern Italy from.

Like so many italian cities Treviso has pre-roman origins. The local Museo Bailo has a permanent show of artifacts found in and around this area. The museum itself is in one of the few remaining medieval streets, Santa Caterina, near piazza del Grano with its twiceweekly market (Tue and Sat) offering everything from local produce and antiques to clothes and homewares.

Due to the market trade, any of the osterias fund along the market offer incredible food at very good value. The wine is also worth a mention, especially at the local osteria by Porta S Tommaso, where choice is the only problem.

A lot of famous artists have been painting for the church and we can find undiscovered treasures in all the churches of the city (normally found in every quarter). S. Francesco, the Duomo and S Nicolo' with its scolarly scientific museum are not to be missed.

Generally I encourage anyone to visit and enjoy this city pleasant and elegant way of life.
Hotels are best selected in the centre of town (Il Focolare being possibly the best value at 60 euros per night for a double room with bath 5 minutes walk from the Duomo and S. Nicolo')

All in all, this is am undiscovered jewel, well worth an exploration.
