The Mighty Mars Bar

Advantages: Classic chocolate bar
Disadvantages: They changed the nougat filling

This is perhaps the most classic chocolate bar from my childhood. It has long been my favourite as a kid and I sort of have to say it still is so as not to feel as if I have disowned it (sorry Mars Bar but I have found other favourites - I still love you though!). 'A Mars a day helps you work rest and play' - this was the little catchphrase that was associated with Mars Bar. Funny really; it's like saying a chocolate bar a day is good for you. The slogan has now changed to 'Pleasure you can't measure' which definitely seems more appropriate. A standard Mars bar comes at 58g, about 11cm long and 1.8cm high. You'll pay about 32p for this bar in supermarkets which is well below the norm of 50p. They used to be more expensive but in recent years, the classic nougat and caramel filling has obviously lost its appeal as new and more ...

Where's The Wine?

Advantages: Quite Tasty
Disadvantages: Covered In Sugar

I got home a couple of nights ago, turned on my PC and settled down to eat a packet (or at least part of a packet) of Fruit Pastilles only to discover in horror, that in my hurry to pick up the local newspaper and something to chew on, on the way home from work, I'd made a bit of a boob and must have picked up a packet of Wine Pastilles in error. The look on my face must have been comical, my other half said I looked like a little spoilt child with my bottom lip stuck out, and eyes bulging like they were about to burst. I must admit I hadn't actually had Wine Pastilles before so after the initial disappointment had worn off I decided to give them a try. The Background Wine Pastilles were originally made by a company called Maynard's who are the same people that make the Fruit Pastilles and Wine Gums. Maynard have been making ...

An Italian in Southsea

Advantages: Good food and service
Disadvantages: Crowded at weekends

. Background music varies from James Brown's 'Papa's got a Brand New Bag' to James Blunt's 'You're Beautiful', but is not loud enough to ruin your attempts at conversation. There was just one waitress serving on that particular evening, and I wondered if the man seated at the bar throughout our stay was her boyfriend although she certainly did not let him distract her from her duties. She brought us menus straight away and we each ordered a glass of house red wine at £2.60. The wine soon arrived and we began to look through the choice of pizzas and risottos. The friend I was with eats only fish and vegetarian food whilst I myself am not much of a red-meat eater, but there were starters and main courses to suit every taste. We were enticed by the offer of two courses for £14, in particular the stuffed mushrooms and chicken or vegetarian risotto ...
