Every summer I go to Troodos with my falimy and friends and we have the traditional souvla (if anyone doesn't know what souvla is, is the Cypriot barbeque). It's so lovely and every year I want to go. The only thing that I regret is, I am from Cyprus and I never had the chance to go to Troodos while it's snowing! I wish one day I could go during the winter.
When I was younger every summer my parents used to send me camping in Troodos where I had a lovevly time there, I won't forget it! One night it was 1:30am and I was chatting with other girls in the room and one of the counselor listened to us and came in our room making us to get up, and get out! She made us 3 girls take 3 different paths in the dark forest and stay there 5 minutes. THAT WAS OUR PUNISHMENT. Awful! I was scared!
I stay in Paphos so it's quite long was to go to Troodos. We drive up the mountains and we can see the great view which is unbelievable wonderful! On the way to reachtroodos we pass a lots of small villages. People standing in the roads waiting for passengers to stop and buy their thing that they sell, fresh fruits, like cherries, apples or peaches and traditional sweet specialities like soujouko and palouze, and some cypriot wines. and the zivania!
You can smell the fresh air and the trees, listen to the birds and relax.
There are paths that take you for long nice walks. There is a variety of interesting birds and florato see, waterfalls so see and admire (I have a lot of foreign people going up there with their swiming customs and stand under the waterfalls, I have never done that!. The are special picnic sites where you are allowed to make your souvla (but be careful you don't light a fire!).
This place is nice to visit is you decide to go in a trip to explore and rlax! The shops sell traditional things and there are small kiosks where you can buy a lot of cypriot things and takw with you. Don't expect to find a club and go out at night! There aren't any clubs like in Agia Napa.
This is an excellent place for older people to go, as I have noticed, old couple go and stay in a hotel in Troodos as they want to relax. Younger people with little kids, would prefer to have their holidays near the beach! There are a lot of Hotels to stay, like ForestPark hotel , Pendeli Hotel, Minotel New Helvetia etc.
If you are thinking having your holidays in Cyprus, don't leave without visiting Troodos! I recommend going up there! It is very easy to go if you rent a car a drive there, you won't get lost, just have a map with you, the signs will help and even if you think you are lost there are friendly people that if you ask they will help you find your way!
