Introduction ``````````````````
My husband recently needed to go to Frankfurt for the weekend on a last minute business trip. I was invited along for the trip -since it was only for the weekend, we did not have time to go out and about eating or drinking, so we had our hopes pinned on the Tryp hotel. The Tryp hotel is a four star hotel situated 10-15 minutes from the airport, it is in the busy region of Frankfurt -everywhere you look there are hotels.
Who did we book with? ````````````````````````````````` We booked with last-minute.com and got our room for 65 Euros per night.
I think that this was good, considering the competition and the fact that we were in the very heart of "hotel land" in Frankfurt - however I do feel that the Euro has made things a lot more expensive. Our flight was very pleasant and we arrived at the airport in good spirits.
Getting there ``````````````````` Outside the airport we found a taxi to take us to our hotel, first mistake -we should have arranged this with the hotel first as we were charged 20 Euros for a 10 minute car journey....oh well we didn't mind, we were looking forward to our stay!!
Checking in ````````````````` We drove into the hotel and everything was easy to find - on the reception desk was a very helpful lady who confirmed our booking with us and gave us a room key (two room keys on my request at no extra charge) and explained that the room key would also work all of the electricty in the room. She asked us if we had stayed before and upon answering "no" she quickly whipped out a small model of a door (a replica room door) and demonstrated how to use the lock / key card she had just issued us with. This was quite funny but helpful as there was a knack to opening the doors.
Our room ````````````` We came to our room via a lift which was quite small but lit well with all of the floors marked clearly.
Having successfully opened the door with our key card and turned on the electricity, we saw that the room was a nice size - not overly big and I must admit that I was expecting something slightly bigger, however we had a television, two beds -reasonable sizes (though one with a broken leg) two beside tables with drawers, a large wardrobe to share, a mini bar and fridge and a desk with the food/room service menu on it. The bathroom was just to the right as you came in the door and contained a shower/bath combination a sink and a toilet. It was not very big -okay for our needs but I felt it could have been a little bigger. We had towels but no shampoo/bath gel -luckily we had bought our own.
To welcome us, on our beds which were all made up with white bedding, we each had a mini packets of Haribo sweets. I love these so that was a highlight for me! (little things...)
We had air conditioning in our room and the temperature was rather nice, we had a large window by the desk -opposite the door that we came in. I did notice that the room was very quiet, despite being in a very busy area, I was very pleased abut this, as I was fairly tired and needed a good nights rest to be up and about early and see some of Frankfurt.
Television service ````````````````````````` I immediately headed fort he cola in the mini bar and sat down on one of the beds, I opened the Haribo and turned on the TV. As we had been told about downstairs, we saw the welcome menu on the TV -this had a selection of things available to do in the hotel and information about the various activities, a room service menu and various other introductions to the hotel.
I was pleased when i saw "language selection" and there was a selection of German or English - I immediately "okayed" the English option, not being able to speak any fluent German, and then flicked through the channels. To my frustration -every channel was still i German other than CNN --after watching a little CNN and relaxing, I thought that it was time to check out some of the other channels and that I must have not done the language selection properly, I went back to the main menu and once again selected "English", I flicked through the channels again, but they were all still in German. I soon realised that it was just the welcome menu which changed between a German or English welcome. I tried to enjoy some programmes that I knew by guessing the subtitles - but soon became bored with this and thought it time to have a little nap before dining.
My husband was eager to check out the bar downstairs (which also served light snacks such as burgers, salads etc) and so he made his way back to the reception area. I lay on my bed and looked at the colouring of the room -- actually I noticed that the room was quite bear -- there were not any pictures at all, the wood was all dark wood and the walls a creamy colour. There was nothing to dislike about the room, it felt quite "modern" for some reason, maybe the layout or the colouring, but it also felt quite relaxing. The bed -despite having a dodgy leg which meant that i was sleeping in a sort of "slanted" position, was actually very comfortable.
The restaurant/evening dining ```````````````````````````````````````````` After my little cat nap and hubby's visit to the bar, we decided to go down to the restaurant fro something to eat. I was feeling quite tired by then (I don't do well on naps:) and not really very hungry, but wanted to see what the restaurant was like and so went down to where it was located on the first/reception floor.
I was pleased with the size, it was spacious and felt comfortable, the tables were wooden and modern looking and the walls had a sort of wood effect decoration to them. There was not much of a change in colour and the so the restaurant just had a sort of "modern" feel to it. It was had a Spanish theme and I relaxed with a San Miguel.
I ordered a salad with chicken which was very nice, for pudding -- as I was so full from my first course (big portions which didn't take long to come at all and very friendly staff) I asked if I could have fruit for my pudding (even though it was not on the menu). The waiter was very happy to ask the chef for some fruit and I had a lovely decorative plate of every kind of fruit I could have wished for.
Even though I had not been feeling hungry, I am very pleased that I did go to dine as it was a very nice experience and I was very impressed with the service, the food and the price was not bad either -- I can not remember how much everything came to, but it was about equal to the taxi fair for what I ate!
My husband enjoyed his food and German beer as well.
We checked with the waiters the time of breakfast and then thanked the for our meal and retired to our room.
Quiet room - nice sleep! ````````````````````````````````` It was quite late by this time so we thought that we would have one last try at watching the television -- we didn't come across any new English channels and CNN were repeating what we had heard before.
I looked across and noticed that hubby has fallen asleep - after one last attempt to find something to watch I became tired and decided to go to sleep so that I could make the most of the old town which we had planned to visit the next morning.
I slept well, we could not hear anybody coming in or our of their rooms , there was no noise on either side of us and there was no noise from outside the window. I was very pleased of this. In fact, the only thing that woke me up was hubby looking for some water in the mini bar at 4.00 in the morning--I was slightly annoyed, but decided not to say anything since it was down to him that I had been able to travel with him! I was soon asleep again and did not wake again until 8.00. We got up feeling refreshed and tried out the shower - it was a good temperature, I put the TV on -you guessed it - CNN!! To wake me up a little and got dressed. We had decided to certainly go down for breakfast at the hotel's dining area as we had enjoyed it so much the previous evening and found the food to be of good quality, not too expensive and the staff helpful.
Breakfast `````````````` We went down to breakfast and it was an impressive spread. It was only down one side of the restaurant, so did not feel quite as spacious as the evening before had but we had a fine choice of buffet breakfast - there were cold meats, fresh fruit, cakes, yoghurts, cereals, eggs, bacon, sausages, tea, coffee, fruit juices and plenty more. We were served our drinks and our empty plates were taken as soon as we had cleared them. We were encouraged to eat as much as we liked and so tucked in, however we did not want to stay long since we wanted to go out to visit the old town.
Deciding to stay an extra night ``````````````````````````````````````````
We went to reception where they informed us that we would have to check out of our room at 11.00 am, since our flight did not come until 10pm that day and we were wanting to explore, we asked if we could possibly keep the room on, the lady was very helpful and checked the rate that we had booked the room for (as mentioned before , this had been done through the website last minute .com) she gave us the same rate for another night, so even though we did not need another night there it did mean that we could make use of the hotel until we were due to picked up for our flight - this meant we could use their restaurant, their bar area, their sauna and gym etc and we could go out to discover some of Frankfurt's old town before my husband needed to discuss work. I was especially pleased as this meant I had a "haven" to return to whilst my husband was going to be at another hotel discussing business.
Hiring a cab `````````````````` After we had sorted that out, we asked if we could get a cab to take us to the old town from reception, again we were lucky and the lady looking after us just picked up the phone and literally two minutes later a cab arrived for us and the cab driver was told the destination by the lady on reception.
The cab driver was a little moody on the way to the old town but we had a great time and returned to the hotel approximately four hours later in good spirits.
Room service--or not!! ```````````````````````````````` We went straight up to our room, most people were out and the cleaning was being done, they had not made it to our room yet, and my husband needed to get ready for his business meeting and so we put the sign on the door to show that we required no cleaning of the room and we were not disturbed at all by the staff.
The bar area ``````````````````` After my husband had finished work we decide to go to the bar area, the first cocktail I ordered, they could not make and the second they had to substitute some of the ingredients. I stuck to the San Miguel after that, not really liking the German larger. The atmosphere was okay but a bit dull - no music etc and not many people. It was a comfortable area though with good snacks, I had a nice cheese burger with chips and salad. We soon got bored of the bar though and decided to go to the airport early for some tax -free shopping before our flight.
Checking out ````````````````` The hotel got us a cab back to the airport and all ran smoothly checking out.
Overall ```````````` In all I liked this hotel but felt that there were areas that could have been improved upon, but for a short stay like us it was fine and the food was lovely.
