As a 18 year old resident of Tunbridge Wells since 1996, I have a wide knowledge of the attractions and facilities available to young people in the town.
The Chalybeate spring from which the town was born was discovered in 1606, thus, in comparison to the surrounding towns, Tunbridge Wells is quite a newly developed community. The older part of the town is the most historically interesting and beautiful, with the pantiles, an area of mostly Tudor townhouses running along the bottom of the common. In 1630, the town was christened 'Royal Tunbridge Wells' following a visit from the Queen Henrietta Maria, mother of Charles 1. In 1678 the Chapel of King Charles the Martyr was built. But Tunbridge Wells did not start to develop as a town until about 1680. From then on houses were built at Mount Ephraim. In 1682 land near the common was sold. After 1682 houses were built in the area of Mount Sion. In 1687 the shops were burned in a fire but the owner rebuilt them, this time with a colonnade in front of their entrances. All these roads lead to the top, modern half of the town, where the Royal Victoria Centre and the Precinct are situated.
The Royal Victoria Centre houses a number of well known stores which cater to a range of buyers. There are also a selection of friendly and warm coffee shops, such as Cafe Nero, Costa Coffee, Starbucks, Puccino's, and Bean.
Tunbridge Wells has a vast selection of restaurants. For those on a budget, I would reccommend Viva, Pizza Organic and ASK (all Italian.) The Hare in neighbouring Langton Green is a comfortable family pub, and there are some fabulous, although expensive restaurants in the centre of the town too.
As for the nightlife, bars Que Pasa and the Litten Tree provide a safe atmosphere with loud, disco music and a good bar. Clubs Coco Lounge and Liquid Lounge are satisfactory, although when busy can be a dirge of sweat and alcohol. Quiter bars are The Office, TN4, The Sound Garden and The Grapevine. To escape the atronomical cost of going out at the weekend in Tunbridge Wells, Wetherspoons is a comfortable, relatively cheap place to drink and to socialise!
Hope this is helpful!
