Wow! We only went there for a short break and we seemed to cram ever such a lot in. My favourite place was Sidi Bou Said, a beautiful village near Carthage where a holy man once lived. It is delightful to recline on the mats in the little building and drink mint tea. Carthage itself is little more than ruins, but they have thoughfully reconstructed a pillar to give you a glimpse of its former glory. The mosaic museum in Tunis was absolutely incredible: if just one piece were over here all the papers would be raving about it. We stayed in Port-El-Kantaoui, which was lovely though touristy. The desert trips are very good value and riding in the Sahara on a camel is an unforgettable experience. Seeing the sun come up over the salt lake and the amphitheatre and El Djem was also amazing. The only disappointing thing was the pushy shopkeepers, the wild animals caught for show, and the troglodyte village of Matmata, where apparently Star Wars was filmed. It was the only thing that I really didn't think worth the effort in this beautiful land.

Advantages: Great Spring weather. Loads to see and not a mozzie in sight Disadvantages: Local dishes a bit thin on the ground and insipid international cuisine
