A trip to Tuol Sleng is a must for any visitor to Cambodia, as it is one of the most graphic and direct ways to get a sense of the horrendous events in this country in the 1970's. On arrival, you would be forgiven for feeling a sense of light-heartedness, as you pass through the gates in the glorious sunshine, into what still looks like a school. However, on entering Block A (the first of 3 separate blocks) the true sense of the horrors of this place ... ...the body found there when Tuol Sleng was freed.
Block B hosts room after room filled with head and shoulders pictures of every person held at Tuol Sleng. Only 5 people out of thousands survived this place. If you can bear to continue to Block C, you will see even smaller cells, still showing bloody scratch marks where prisoners fought to escape the horrors they were forced to endure.
After the visit, you will leave, and again be warmed by the sun ...
