Turin always makes me think to my childhood and to my father. We usually get there during weekends, or when I was free from my scholar duties. He did a peculiar work, he was a window dresser, and the majority of his clients were in Turin. Strangely as it is, I never saw Turin with the sun: when I got there the weather was always rainy and cold!
Turin is a serious, grey, shiny town, that makes me think to an old lady of the middle of the 19th century. Marbles are everywhere, and the ancient buildings cover different architectural styes, from Renaissance to Liberty. The charm of this town is in its atmosphere of mistery, as if any corner should hide a secret. From the middle of the town, the large Castle Square, all the streets unravel themselves like a chessboard, so the layout of the town is perfectly geometrical.
A visitor should walk throughout Turin without needing to come out in the open, thank to its 18 kilometers of porticoes that sorround the centre of the town. The town is embraced on three sides from Alpine peaks, (among them the hill of Soperga, whit the sad remind of the crash of the Turin Football Club during the 60's, but also the wonderful Valentine's park, one of the greatest city parks in Italy), while the river Pò crosses it's straight, large promenades.
I never had the possibility to visit the Valentine's park (the weekends and my vacation days were working days for my father....), but I visited the Risorgimental National Museum (you can recognize it from the statue of Pietro Micca that stands just in front of the main entrance), the Mole Antonelliana and the Egyptian Museum.
I remember that the the Mole Antonelliana was a little disappointing, because in the inside it is completely empty but for the lift that takes people to the upper part of the dome: during the climbing with the lift, you can see the wonderful frescoes and mosaics that decorate all the walls and the inside of the cupola.
The Egyptian museum is interesting and wonderful, but it must be told that it is a little too big and distracting, to visit it completely during a unique visit. To make things worse, this museum seems to be always under renovation, so you can never find all its sections open in the same time, and sometimes the whole museum is closed! So, if you want to visit this particular museum, better to collect information about the aivalable days, not to find it close!
The other important buildings of the town are Palazzo Madama and Palazzo Reale, but the whole town offers a lot of wievs of historical places.
What more? Well, if you'll visit Turin, don't forget to have a look of three of the most important cafes of Italy, the Caffè Torino and the Caffè San Carlo where Italian Risorgimento intellectuals meet themselves, and the Cafè Florio, an artistic bistrò.
Another important thing to do when in turin, is to find a confectioner's shop (under the porticoes near San Carlo square there is plenty of them) to buy the 'Baci di Dama' (the 'Kisses of a Lady), particular cookies that became the symbol of this town.
Advantages: Scenery, museums, food, shopping Disadvantages: English not widely spoken - brush up on the basics before you go
What I knew about Turin you could write on the back of a postage stamp - home of FIAT, famous Shroud, The Italian Job - boy did I have a lot to learn!
The capital of the Piedmont region, Torino became home to the Kings of Italy when Vittorio Emanuale II of the House of Savoy (which had reigned in the area for 500 years) was crowned and the beautiful palace, Palazzo Reale (piazza Castello 191) is well worth a visit. ********* History of Turin ****************
Describing Turin is not an easy task; the city is known for its cold, greyness and large industries. On the other hand, it is also a fascinating, interesting city. It is a city of charm, rich in historic monuments with the entrepreneurial spirit of a place in continual economic growth. It is very ordered, I ... ...was filmed in Turin.
Turin or Torino (as it is locally known) is located in the Piedmont region of Italy which is at the ‘thigh’ of the country ie. the North West, bordering the French alps. Turin is reputed to be a magical city and it can only be by magic that a city, considered to be the capital of Italian heavy industry (FIAT is based here), is also one of the main tourist attractions of Italy and the fifth largest city in the country.

This may not be one of those famous magical fairytale Italian cities like Venice,Florence or Pisa but one of the most important cities of northen Italy apart from Milan . This is a lovely city situated at the footsteps of the Alps, bordering France and Switzerland, and is the capital of Piemonte region ( which means ’’foot of the mountains’’ in French).Personally ,for me, northern Alpine Italian region is more picturesque and serene than the arid ... ...in one of my first visits to this country and hence fondly remember this place.
This is historically,a old city with once even boasting of being the capital of Italy in 19th century and has been ruled by French,Austrians,Russians. Also economically speaking ,Torino is an important industrial centre, with this being the birthplace of auto giant FIAT and Olivetti being the other best known name. But industry is on the outskirts. The rest is a lovely, ...

Turin is a regal, baroque toy.
Of the early life of this town you can still see the two gates of the roman 'castrum'fortified village): one is the Porta Palatina the other is barely visible because was merged in the Juvara's Palazzo Madama.
Of the medieval life only one complete (half abandoned) house.
The real soul of this town is the essential baroque of the Savoia dinasty. They call this architectural project 'theatrum sabaudae' the theatre of the Savoia.
They build a major Royal Palace in the centre of the town (Palazzo Reale in piazza Castello) and another in the Parco del Valentino, then a great number of other buildings, squares, churches around the town to
amaze the visitor's eye.

Advantages: good food Disadvantages: a large chunk of dodgy immigrants
I went to Torino last year and was disappointed. It has deteriorated, in my opinion. There were quite a lot people from North Africa around, and most of them looked quite dodgy. The town is still a rich town, mainly thanks to the industry of cars. I like very much the mountains around Torino, which are never too far away. I can give you a couple of good addresses to eat, if you happen to be there. you can try the self-service restaurant "La Grangia" ... ...especially at lunch, but the queue is never too long and the food is very good, and the choice wide. A 3 course meal will cost you £5 including a small bottle of wine!. otherwise try "Ristorante Peppino" in Via Mercanti 7. A full dinner will not cost you more than £10 ...

promotions, that it costs close to nothing to fly, and, as a result, you get the group of friends out on a mission to have as much fun they can..and to make as much noise as they can.
Although, as I said, Ryanair do have many good promotions to some part of Italy and France, it must be said that if you do nto grab any of these offers, seats are as expensive as on more reputed airlines, like BA or BMI.
My advice would be to fly with Ryanir only if you can have a ticket at 50% the price you would pay on another carrier, OR if you intend to fly straight into some regions. Turin in Italy, for example, is a perfect location to go to the Alps in summer and winter..no need to fly into Milan for that! ...

Advantages: low prices, good promotions now and again Disadvantages: exceptionaly poor quality service
Having found a flight to Turin, Italy for only £40 (RETURN!) I quickly snapped up the offer by Ryanair. And I wasn't even planning on having a holiday! Then I wondered what the catch was....
On the morning of the flight, I left with my boyfriend and we both travelled to catch the early morning train from London Liverpool Street Station to Stanstead. This went smoothly with no fuss. However, on arrival at Liverpool Street Station, there were many people there making a lot of noise - over what I was yet to discover. And at 5:30am!! I was getting worried. We joined the already large queue at the ticket counter and overheard the guy in front of us saying into his mobile phone that his train had been cancelled and that he was going to be late (for whatever it was he was late for). Looking up at the notice board I made a point ...
Advantages: Properly French Disadvantages: No globalised mod-cons such as an Internet cafe
, banks, convenience store, betting outlet, lovely delicatessans, hairdressers and clothes shops. Opening hours are at the discretion of the owners. But then, if you want the full French experience, then this includes bizarre opening hours. In summer time, healthy low-fat meals are all the rage but the bakeries still provide some delicious high-fat alternatives.
Brides is also proud of its involvement with the Albertville winter Olympics. As an official Olympic town, it celebrated its 10th anniversary last year with a street party, fireworks and live music outdoors. Memories of the Olympics can be seen around town in the form of faded signs and re-named places.
You can get to Brides all sorts of ways. The closest main airports are Geneva (Switzerland), Turin (Italy) and Grenoble (France). Genoa is closer still but it may be difficult to ...
